'Wayne Reads' kickoff Monday night at WCC

Volunteers help erect the "Wayne County Reads" homemade pirate ship in front of the Arts Council on Saturday.
Wayne County Reads will kick off its 2009 "season of reading" Monday at 7 p.m. in the Moffatt Auditorium at Wayne Community College.
Activities will include brief remarks from Angus Konstam, the author of this year's book, via video from his home in Scotland. Konstam's book, "Blackbeard: America's Most Notorious Pirate," will be on sale during the reception.
The featured presentation Monday night will be a talk about the discovery of the Queen Anne's Revenge, which is believed to be Blackbeard's flagship, in the Beaufort Inlet. Speaker Mark Wilde-Ramsing will describe what was found on dives that have been made down to the wreckage. Some dives have been as recent as November.
A reception will follow with refreshments and a pirate swordplay performance by the Shadow Players Stage Combat Group.
This event was made possible by a grant from the Goldsboro Rotary Club.
The next event on the Wayne County Reads will be a talk by Kevin P. Duffus, author of the new book, "The Last Days of Blackbeard." His presentation will be at 7 p.m. on Feb. 16 in the Weil Auditorium at the Wayne County Public Library's main branch on Ash Street.
Both activities are free and the public is invited.
