Victim found unresponsive
The Wayne County Sheriff's Office says the death of 40-year-old George Allen Williams of Heather Ann Lane is under investigation. Williams was not under a doctor's care or on any medications, according to the report.
'Mystery shopper' check scam
A 33-year-old Lucama woman reported she had been sent a fraudulent check by a company purporting to employ her as a "mystery shopper," according to a Sheriff's Office report. The woman, Tammy Layman of Tedder Road, said she was sent a check for $3,969 by a company calling itself Info Direct Monitoring and Research Services. The company told her to keep $300, use $150 on shopping and hotels, and send the remaining $3,319 in cash back to the company through Western Union. Ms. Layman said she was immediately suspicious of the check, asking her bank to hold it for a few days to see it was valid. It was not, authorities said.
Fire extinguisher set off in hallway
An Eastern Wayne Middle School employee told Goldsboro police late on Tuesday that someone had released a fire extinguisher's contents in a hallway, which sent one unnamed person to Wayne Memorial Hospital for treatment, according to the report. Police said the fire extinguisher was a 15-pound model.
