A 32-year-old Virginia man is charged with the statutory rape of a 15-year-old Wayne County girl, authorities say.
Isaac Garcia-Perez, 32, is charged with one count of statutory rape and was jailed on Dec. 31 under a $50,000 bond, Detective Sgt. Tammy Odom said.
The initial report was filed with Greene County, but Mrs. Odom said that all of the illegal sexual activity occurred within Wayne County's borders.
Mrs. Odom said the 15-year-old told her parents.
"She (the victim) knew his name. Her parents didn't know him, but she did," Mrs. Odom said.
The detective said she was glad that the girl overcame her fears and told her parents about the unlawful sexual encounters.
"I'm just glad she came forward when she did," Mrs. Odom said. "It was very brave to do that."
According to his arrest report, Garcia-Perez was born in Mexico and worked as a self-employed laborer in Annandale, Va.
Garcia-Perez was arrested at a Fremont home on N.C. 222, the arrest report shows.
There was no answer at the number listed for Garcia-Perez.
According to state law, Garcia-Perez faces a Class B1 felony, the state's second most-severe class offense, because of the age difference between him and his alleged victim.
First-time offenders with no prior record charged with a B1 felony could face 16 to 20 years in prison, according to state law.
