SEVEN SPRINGS -- A ceremony to dedicate a Civil War monument in honor of Confederate soldiers and sailors who were killed at the Battle of Whitehall in 1862 or served aboard the ironclad CSS Neuse will be held Dec. 13 at Whitehall Confederate Memorial Park on Budd Fields Road near Seven Springs.
The battle was fought Dec. 15-16 between Union forces headed for Goldsboro and Confederate units guarding the site where the boat was being built.
The ceremony will start at 11 a.m.
The park is owned by the National Sons of Confederate Veterans organization. The SCV donated $3,700 to the project, which cost a total of $12,000. The granite marker was donated by members of the Edmund Ruffin Fire Eaters Camp of the Virginia SCV.
