An endowed scholarship has been established at Methodist University in Fayetteville on behalf of a Wayne County couple.
The $25,000 gift was given by Wallace Thorne to honor the memory of his wife, Irene Newsome Thorne.
Wallace lives in the New Hope community.
The couple owned and operated Goldsboro Tractor & Equipment Co., until their retirement. He remains an active member of Beston United Methodist Church.
"I cannot think of a more appropriate way to honor someone than to give the gift of education that will enable graduates to go out and touch the lives of others," said Dr. M. Elton Hendricks, president of Methodist University, an independent four-year school. For more information, call (910) 630-7200.
