Winning more than 62 percent of the vote Tuesday, Snow Hill Mayor Don Davis defeated Kathy Taft for the Democratic nomination for the state Senate District 5 seat.
Davis, who was running against Ms. Taft in a second primary after falling just short of the 40 percent needed to win outright during the first contest in Mary, will face state Rep. Louis Pate, R-Wayne, in November.
The pair will be facing off to determine who will step into the seat currently held by retiring state Sen. John Kerr, D-Wayne.
Davis carried the day Tuesday by winning handily in two of the district’s three counties – more than 77 percent of the vote in Wayne and more than 73 percent of the vote in Greene.
Ms. Taft, who is from Greenville and is a member of the state Board of Education, won Pitt County with slightly more than 59 percent of the vote.
