Wayne County Public Schools will hold kindergarten pre-registration at all 15 elementary schools on April 11 from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m.
To register for kindergarten, a child must turn 5 on or before Oct. 16.
Parents or legal guardians must present an official birth certificate, immunization records, and the child's social security number, as well as "proof of residence."
To enroll, parents must present two sources of documentation such as utility bills, tax bills, deed of trust, rent receipt, or any document which clearly proves current resident status. Military families living on base may present a letter from base housing as proof of residence.
Children are enrolled in the school district in which they live, and school assignments are made by the local school system.
State law requires that before registering for kindergarten, a child must receive a health assessment and shots. The assessment must be documented by an official report form available from the school system, the county Health Department and most pediatricians' offices. In some cases, the form can be returned to the school by the first day of class on Aug. 25.
For the complete list of enrollment requirements, visit the district website at www.waynecountyschools.org.
If unable to register on the designated date, contact the school as soon as possible, visit the administrative offices on E. Royall Avenue, or call 731-5900.
Students currently in kindergarten will not attend school on April 11.
