Students at Rosewood Elementary School have been collecting and giving away books.
Last year, staff at the school decided the best way to reward students for reading was to give them books, rather than certificates or other prizes, said Jennifer Taylor, media coordinator.
Since the beginning of the school year, students have been encouraged to bring in new or gently used books. About 2,700 were collected.
"Our goal is to have enough books to give each student at our school one book each nine weeks," Mrs. Taylor said. "We need about 3,200 books to be able to do that, so we are still in need of books."
The first book giveaway has already been held, with each classroom invited to the school's library, where they were given an opportunity to select a book.
The effort has proven to be a good way to develop good reading habits, Mrs. Taylor said.
