The speaker for the Aug. 4 meeting of the Duplin County Historical Society will be W. Keats Sparrow, who will discuss Revolutionary War General Richard Caswell of Kinston and Lenoir County, who was North Carolina's first governor.
A new biography of Caswell, "The First of Patriots and Best of Men: Richard Caswell in Public Life," edited by Dr. Sparrow, will be released by the Lenoir County Colonial Commission on Aug. 13, in conjunction with a week-long series of programs and activities recognizing and celebrating Caswell's life.
