Juveniles charged
in barn fire
Two 14-year-old boys face charges in connection with a fire that destroyed a barn on Nahunta Road Wednesday afternoon. One of the juveniles identified in the case was accused of setting a fire about a month ago on Hinnant Road in Pikeville, Wayne County Sheriff Carey Winders said. That juvenile was taken into custody and transported to the youth detention center in Greenville, said Wayne County Sheriff's Detective Sgt. Carl Lancaster. The other was given a criminal summons and released to the custody of his parents, Lancaster said.
Units of the Nahunta, Fremont and Pikeville volunteer fire departments responded to 1971 Nahunta Road NW at about 3 p.m. Wednesday and found the barn owned by Paul Bostic of Virginia engulfed in flames. The barn, which was filled with hay, had burned to the ground by the time firefighters arrived, Nahunta Volunteer Fire Chief Jay Howell said. An investigation showed the fire was purposely set.
Neighbors said they saw children playing in the area Tuesday and just moments before the fire broke out on Wednesday.
The fire caused more than $600 in damage. But the fire took a heavier toll on several firefighters who responded to the fire. Several were treated for heat-related injuries. The conditions were not considered severe, but Howell urged parents to teach children about the dangers of setting fires. Suspects sought
The thieves who broke into Goldsboro's City Maintenance Complex on or about July 12 have stuck again. This time, they are suspected of breaking into property owned by Smith Equipment Co. on two separate occasions. On Saturday, someone broke into an enclosed cargo trailer and stole more than $8,000 worth of property. On Sunday, when the owner went back to secure the property that the thieves had left behind, he found that they had returned and stolen an additional $8,300 worth of equipment Motorola radio equipment, a band saw and a drill.
Both the Goldsboro City Maintenance Complex and Smith Equipment Co. property can be accessed from Peacock Park.
Anyone with information is asked to call Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers at 735-2255. Callers can remain anonymous and could receive up to $1,000 if their information leads to a felony arrest.
Investigations
Wayne County law enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*Amanda Jo Fralick, 33, of Railroad Road, Pikeville, reported Wednesday someone cut her in the face with a sharp object.
*Shontell Poole reported someone stole two televisions, a DVD player, jewelry and other items, all valued at $1,815, from his home.
