SummerFest at Waynesborough

A 109-year-old quilt that's never been slept under will be among the numerous displays featured during SummerFest at Waynesborough Historical Village on Saturday.
The blanket will be featured in the Quilt Show, which will be held from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. in the historical village on U.S. 117 Bypass South.
The quilt show is already on display and will be open until July 21. Quilters will be on hand to answer questions and visitors are welcome to work on a "work-in-progress."
Among the other attractions at Saturday event will be Civil War encampments and a field surgical demonstration with special effects by Gary Riggs.
The Tarheel Civilians will give a demonstration of crafts made during the 1800s, and blacksmith Charles Andy Anderson also will deliver a demonstration.
A guided trail walk will begin at 10 a.m.
The North Carolina Falconers Association also will be on hand to show off some new birds.
Several old-timey games for children will be held, including a sack race at noon and 2 p.m. and a tug-of-war.
Other attractions include a watermelon eating contest at 1 p.m., followed by a watermelon seed-spitting contest at 1:30 p.m. Two 31/2 foot dolls will be given away. One is a Victorian child, and the other is an Indian maiden. The dolls are valued at $400 each.
"They were bought for Waynesborough many years ago by the late Odessa Jackson for our General Store when it opened," Ms. Baker said.
Operation Lifesaver, a group that provided railroad safety education for law enforcement and school children, will provide a makeshift train to ride.
Parking is free, but a $1 donation is encouraged. Explorer Scouts will be on hand to help with parking.
