Law enforcement and fire department officials are still trying to explain the cause of an explosion last night near the 2800 block of Nahunta Road.
Emergency dispatchers received a call at about 9 p.m., with several residents calling to say they had heard a loud explosion.
"It sounded like a bomb, really," resident Peggy Hales said.
Emergency personnel dispatched the Nahunta, Pikeville and Little River volunteer fire departments to Weathervane Road, but emergency crews could not find anything.
"Based on the caller's address and what the neighbors said, they described a large explosion," Nahunta Fire Chief Jay Howell said. "But we couldn't find a fire or any building damage."
The fire departments then called in the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. Once deputies arrived, Howell said the firemen were relieved of their duties while deputies questioned witnesses.
Wayne County Sheriff's Capt. George Raecher said this morning that there had been no report of the incident filed.
