BURGAW -- The 3rd Annual North Carolina Blueberry Festival will be held Saturday, June 24, in downtown Burgaw.
The event celebrates the state's largest fruit crop and will feature arts and crafts vendors, musical acts, a car show, road run and bicycle ride, children's games and fireworks.
Food of all kinds will be available, but the highlight will be dishes and confections prepared using blueberries. Blueberry plants and containers of freshly picked berries also will be on sale.
The day-long celebration begins at 9 a.m. at the Pender County Courthouse Square in downtown Burgaw and lasts until 9 p.m., when the day will culminate with a fireworks display.
Displays on growing blueberries will be held.
Bladen and Duplin counties also will be helping sponsor the event, which will start Friday, June 23, with a blueberry recipe contest at the Agriculture Building at 801 South Walker Street in Burgaw. The competition is sponsored by The Wilmington Star News with cash prizes being awarded in each of six categories.
