Wayne County is among those under a Red Flag warning because of the danger of "explosive fire growth" in grass and brush, according to the National Weather Service in Raleigh.
In Wayne, the warning was issued for 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. when winds gusting to 30 mph were expected to die down.
The weather service advised caution with any outdoor burning. Burning cigaretettes tossed from cars also pose a threat.
Outdoor burning is also discouraged through the weekend as dry, windy weather was predicted.
