helps in arrest
A Wayne County man was arrested by Wayne County sheriff's deputies within 15 minutes of a strong-armed robbery after a detective heard the suspect's description.
A man on Sunday night pushed through two customers at the checkout line at the Family Dollar store in the Five Points Shopping Plaza in Mar Mac, grabbed $40 from a cash register and fled, the report said.
A description of the suspect was broadcast. Detective Sgt. Rick Farfour heard the transmission and notified patrol deputies of a possible suspect. Farfour said he had known that a man matching the suspect's description had committed similar crimes in the same area.
Sheriff's Lt. Darryl Overton, patrol Sgt. Jeff Williams and Deputies Aaron Cantwell and Matt Sasser responded and found the man at his home. Witnesses positively identified the man as the suspect, and he was arrested.
Dennis James Martin, 25, of Brock Road was charged with felony common-law robbery. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $25,000 secured bond.
Sheriff Carey Winders complimented the officers for their exchange of information and their quick response.
Martin also was held in lieu of a $2,000 secured bond on an outstanding arrest order for another crime.
Martin had been charged with five similar crimes since October, 2003. He was sentenced in April 2004 to 14 to 17 months in prison after pleading guilty to three counts of larceny from the person and one count of common-law robbery.
Truck in 2 wrecks
A pickup truck was involved in two wrecks Saturday, about seven hours apart on Sheridan Forest Road near Mount Airy Road, according to reports filed with the Highway Patrol.
The first wreck occurred at about 2:15 a.m. The driver, Oneyda Garcia, 17, of Old Jason Road, was charged with exceeding a safe speed. The report said the eastbound pickup had run off the left side, struck a ditch and overturned into a field. Damage was set at $2,900.
The second wreck was reported at 9:17 a.m. The report said the pickup had rounded a curve and had run off the right side, the driver overcorrected the steering, and the pickup ran off the left side, struck a ditch and overturned again, the report said. The driver fled. Damage was put at $2,500. The pickup was registered to Yrma Campos of Old Jason Road, LaGrange.
In other collisions:
*A car was demolished in a wreck at 5:30 a.m. Saturday on Pineview Cemetery Road near Adams Road, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Honorio Perez Rodriguez, 24, of Garland Place, Seven Springs, was charged with exceeding a safe speed. The report said his car had run off the right side out of control in a left curve, struck the ditch and overturned. The car was valued at $3,000.
*Damages were estimated at $8,000 in a two-car collision at 6:14 p.m. Saturday at O'Berry Center and Perkins Mill roads, the Highway Patrol said. A northbound driver, Paige Danielle Naylor, 16, of Murrells Inlet, S.C., was charged with a yield violation. The report said the car that Ms. Naylor was driving had collided with a westbound auto that was operated by Andrew Kevin Farmer, 19, of U.S. 70 West.
*Damages were set at $7,000 in a two-vehicle crash at 4:10 p.m. Friday at Tommy's and Hare roads, the Highway Patrol said. A southbound driver, John Wilkers Thompson III, 47, of South Pineview Avenue, was charged with a yield violation at a stop sign. The report said Thompson's car had collided with an eastbound auto that was driven by Cameron Drew Best, 39, of Pine Court.
Stolen cars found
Two men were arrested Tuesday by Wayne County sheriff's deputies and charged with auto theft in separate incidents.
Deputies said they had stopped a 1998 Chevrolet Malibu on Durham Lake Road because it had a brake light out. When Sgt. Chris Worth checked the license number, he found that the car had been stolen from a car dealership in Pennsylvania.
The driver fled but was captured quickly. Douglas Earl Martin, 34, of Timothy Street, Dudley, was charged with felony possession of a stolen car, misdemeanor possession of stolen goods and resisting arrest. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of an $18,000 secured bond.
The car, valued at $3,000, had been reported stolen from Scott Honda of West Chester, Pa.
The second man, Jacob Lee Spivey, 37, of Blackjack Church Road, was charged with felony vehicle larceny. He was jailed in lieu of a $2,500 secured bond.
Spivey was accused of stealing a car owned by Lisa Ann Lewis of Princeton.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*A diamond wedding ring was stolen between Monday and Tuesday from a room at the Jamison Inn at 1408 S. Harding Drive, Goldsboro police said. The owner, Tonya L. Gaskins of Pikeville, said the ring was worth $4,700.
*A red Honda 400EX four-wheeler was stolen between Nov. 2 and Tuesday from a storage barn in the 600 block of Princeton Road, sheriff's deputies said. The owner, Justin Wayne Martin of Goldsboro, put a $3,500 value on it.
