Fire damages shop
A grass fire spread out of control Sunday and damaged a repair shop at 2216 N.C. 55 West at Old Grantham Road, officials said Monday.
Damage was estimated at $1,000 to the building, Smith Chapel Volunteer Fire Chief Charlie McClenny said. The five tractors in the shop were not damaged.
"Someone came by my house and reported the fire," said McClenny, who lives nearby. "It was smoking every which way. I called the department, and we had a quick response. That's why there was no more damage."
About 16 Smith Chapel volunteers answered the 3:20 p.m. call with four trucks. Mount Olive and Grantham provided mutual aid.
Brian Jennette of Mount Olive rented the building, valued at $7,500, from Norris Jordan of N.C. 55 West. Jennette repairs tractors, lawn motors and other equipment. At one time, McClenny said the tin building was open and used as a cucumber shed, but he said Jordan had enclosed it.
Fire strikes barn
A grass fire spread quickly across three yards Monday and damaged a barn and a tractor at 2820 Indian Springs Road, a fire official said.
Indian Springs Volunteer Fire Chief Leroy Blizzard said the cause of the fire remains under investigation by the N.C. Forestry Service.
The barn was engulfed in flames when about a dozen Indian Springs volunteers answered the 4:45 p.m. alarm with four trucks. Several Dudley and Arrington firefighters assisted. They remained for about an hour and a half.
The resident, Rosa Cooper, rented the barn that was owned by John Holmes of Richmond, Va. A damage estimate was not available.
2 hurt in wrecks
Two people were injured and damages were estimated at $43,800 in seven recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, the Highway Patrol reported.
*Damages were estimated at $5,600 in a two-truck collision at 11:28 p.m. Friday at U.S. 70 and Perkins Mill Road, the Highway Patrol said. The eastbound driver of a tractor-trailer truck, Linda Janelle Demunbrun, 40, of Rockwell, was charged with a stoplight violation. The report said Ms. Demunbrun was making a U-turn and her big rig collided with a westbound pickup truck that was driven by Joseph Taylor Bergman, 18, of Capps Bridge Road, Princeton.
*Damages were estimated at $8,000 in a two-vehicle crash at 6:28 p.m. Thursday on Stevens Mill Road near Dobbersville Road, the Highway Patrol said. An eastbound driver, Kena A. Grimsley, 27, of North Hillcrest Drive, was charged with exceeding a safe speed. The report said Ms. Grimsley's sport utility vehicle had run off the right side, then careened across the road and off the left side and overturned into another eastbound vehicle. The other driver, Henry Fields, 64, of N.C. 581 South, said he could not see the SUV because its lights were not on and he was blinded by an oncoming vehicle's lights.
*A driver was injured in a one-car wreck at 10 p.m. Thursday on Genoa Road near Pecan Road, the Highway Patrol said. Michael John Kyger, 19, of York Drive was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. He was charged with driving left of center after he said he had swerved to miss a deer. The report said the car had run off the left side, struck a ditch and a tree and overturned. The car, valued at $1,200, was destroyed.
*A pickup truck was destroyed at 3:55 a.m. Thursday in a fire on Ferry Bridge Road near Stevens Mill Road, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Jarrett Brent Lassiter, 25, of River Bluff Road, said he had swerved to the right to avoid a deer and the pickup had run off the right side and struck a ditch. He was charged with driving while impaired and a lane-control violation. The pickup was valued at $12,000.
*A man leaving his driveway was charged with a safe-movement violation after his car collided with a pickup truck at 6:31 p.m. Wednesday on U.S. 70 near Long's Plant Farm Road, the Highway Patrol said. The report said a car driven by James Kornegay Thompson, 74, of U.S. 70 East had collided with an eastbound pickup truck. The other motorist was identified as Dionicio Jose Tapiz, 31, of South Beston Road, LaGrange. Damages were set at $7,000.
*Damage was estimated at $5,000 after a tractor-trailer truck hit a deer at 11:19 p.m. Jan. 3 on N.C. 55 near Kelly Springs Road, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Kenneth Earl Jones, 43, of Ayden, was not charged nor injured.
*A driver said she swerved to miss a deer at 6:41 p.m. Jan. 3 on N.C. 222 near Red Hill Road and was injured after her car ran off the road and hit a junked vehicle, the Highway Patrol said. Scarlet Ann Beamon, 55, of Stantonsburg was released after emergency-room treatment. She was charged with a lane-control violation. Her car, valued at $5,000, was demolished.
Goat stolen
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*A white female goat who had just given birth was stolen between Sunday and Monday from a barn at the Governor Charles B. Aycock Birthplace, deputies said. Jeff Fritzinger, the manager of the state historic site, said the goat was worth $75. The thief had damaged the barn door and a fence post, the report said.
*Thieves inflicted about $3,580 in damages to a disabled car between Saturday and Sunday on Grantham School Road and then stole a leather coat and 30 cassette tapes from inside, deputies said. The owner, James Shelton Sutton of Mount Olive, put a $300 value on the stolen property. The front, back and side windows were smashed, and the trunk, hood and top of the car were damaged.
*Two wrenches, a grinder and a chisel were stolen between Friday and Saturday after a van door was damaged in the parking lot at Coastal Fleet Service at 2369 U.S. 70 West, deputies said. The owner, Lenston Whitfield of Goldsboro, estimated the value of the stolen property at $650 and damage at $50.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A thief threw a rock through a window at Goldsboro Middle School at 801 N. Lionel St. between Friday and Monday, then destroyed two vending machines and stole an unknown amount of money, police said. Each vending machine was valued at $3,000. Damage to the window was set at $200.
*A woman left her car Oct. 8 for repairs at the AAMCO Transmission shop at 4201 U.S. 70 East, then returned Dec. 3 and found the car missing, police said. The owner, Tessa Almeta Jones of Goldsboro, said an employee told her that another man had paid the towing bill and then towed the car away. She said her 1991 burgundy Honda Accord was worth $3,000.
Teen charged
A teenager was arrested Monday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with felony forgery and felony uttering.
Rashawn Raymore Allen, 18, of Waynewoods Drive was accused of stealing checks from a home on Waynewoods Drive, then forging and passing them at a BB&T branch in Goldsboro, Detective Sgt. Carl Lancaster said. Allen was released from custody on a $4,000 unsecured bond.
