Washella Turner graduated from the University of Florida in Gainsville on Saturday, Dec. 17, with a PhD in African American Literature.
Her dissertation was entitled "Unity or Dissension? African American Literary Perspectives on Twen-tieth-Century Interracial Or-ganizations and Relations."
A recipient of a four-year alumni fellowship, she completed her doctorate in three and a half years, and is the first year-long Frederick Douglass Teaching Scholar at West Chester University in Pennsylvania.
A 1991 graduate of Eastern Wayne High School, she earned a bachelor of art's degree in English from Elizabeth State University in 1995 and a master of art's degree in multicultural literature in 1999 from East Carolina University.
She is the daughter of William and Geneva Turner.
Two Wayne County students were among the Dec. 12 graduates from the University of South Carolina in Columbia. Charlie T. Oneal of Goldsboro received a bachelor of science degree in interdisciplinary studies and J.W. Williams of Pikeville received an associate's degree in science.
Christopher Allan Bell of Wayne County has been recoginzed for scholastic achievement at Western Carolina University. The son of Rickie and Donna Bell of Fremont, he is a recipient of the Excellence Award. The competitive scholarship is worth $500 per year and is renewable for up to four years. A graduate of Charles B. Aycock High School, Bell is majoring in history at Western.

Jefferson Wayne Foy, Sharon Powell Holmes and Wanda Kay Summerlin of Mount Olive are on the president's list at James Sprunt Community College and Crystal Stanley Rouse of Mount Olive is on the college's dean's list. The president's list consistes of those students who successfuly completed a full-time class load and earned a grade point avearge of 4.0. The dean's list consists of those students who earned a grade point average of 3.50 to 3.99, with no grade lower than a B.
Neil Vincent Shipman graduated Dec. 10 from N.C. Wesleyan College with a bachelor's degree in justice studies.
Jessica Gale Amon graduated magna cum laude from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte on Aug. 12. She received a bachelor of art's degree in psychology with a minor in religious studies. She is a member of Psi Chi, the psychology honor society, as well as Phi Kappa Phi, an academic honor society. She is the daughter of Kay and Joe Goulding and David and Linda Amon and the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Amon, A.W. Goulding and the late Hilda Goulding.
