Fugitive found
An alert employee at the Boulevard Pawn Shop in Goldsboro recognized a man in the store Tuesday as a state-wanted fugitive and notified Wayne County emergency dispatchers.
Sheriff's Deputies C.G. Talarico and M.K. Cox and Goldsboro police Sgt. Mike West quickly arrived and arrested 45-year-old Carl Lionel Simmons of Second Street. Simmons was wanted on outstanding charges from Wayne and Greene counties.
Simmons had been charged with one felony count each of breaking and entering and larceny and two felony counts of possession of stolen goods. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $35,000 secured bond.
Shots fired
Two men entered a convenience store at 601 W. Ash St. before dawn today and fired a handgun at two employees, according to a Goldsboro police report.
The employees, Waled Alkhanshali and Sulayman Mohammed Alkhanshali, were not struck. But one returned fire, and the suspects fled north toward the Westhaven housing project, the report said.
One suspect was described as black, 5-feet-10, and he wore a black hat, black jacket and black pants. The other suspect was described as black, 5-feet-11, and he wore a camouflage jacket with a fur collar and jeans.
Driver injured
A driver from Goldsboro was injured in a two-vehicle collision at 8:56 a.m. Tuesday on North Berkeley Boulevard near Cashwell Drive, Goldsboro police said. Dustin Ryan Porter, 20, of Adams Street was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said.
A southbound driver, Lisa A. Lancaster, 34, of True Vine Road, Pikeville, was charged with a safe-movement violation. The report said Ms. Lancaster was making a left turn and her sport utility vehicle had collided with Porter's oncoming northbound car.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*A 30-year-old disabled Ford Bronco, 22 steel I-beams and a tool box were stolen between Nov. 22 and Tuesday from the 200 block of Sand Pit Road, deputies said. The thief also damaged a lock on a shed. The owner, Ella Rose Arnette of Greenville, estimated the value of the stolen property at $2,050.
*A white, four-door 1990 Lincoln Town Car was stolen Tuesday from the 100 block of Mooring Lane, deputies said. The car, rented by the resident, Jamey Lewis, from A&A Auto Rentals of Goldsboro, was valued at $5,000.
Thefts
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A video-game system, 10 DVDs, a combination television and DVD player, a pair of boots and a woman's jewelry were stolen Tuesday after a door was damaged at a home in the 700 block of Corney Street, police said. The resident, S.N. Walker, estimated the value of the stolen property at $950 and damage at $75. The jewelry included two necklaces, a bracelet and a set of earrings.
*A gas grill was stolen Tuesday after a camper shell on a truck was damaged in a parking lot in the 1000 block of South George Street, police said. The owner, Earl Hill Jones of Goldsboro, put a $125 value on the new grill and set damage at $50.
Larceny charge
The Wayne County Sheriff's Office cleared a jewelry theft Monday with the arrest of Caitlyn Virginia Stone, 18, of Old Grantham Road.
Ms. Stone was charged with felony larceny of about $1,500 worth of jewelry on Friday. Detective Sgt. Rick Farfour said the jewelry was returned to the owner. Ms. Stone's bond was set at $2,000.
