Man shot down; another robbed
Two Goldsboro men were injured in separate weekend assault, according to Goldsboro police reports.
James Lee Croom, 23, was shot several times at 8:55 p.m. as he stood outside of a convenience store at South Slocumb Street and Seymour Drive, police said. He then went inside the store, where he was found by police. The assailant was described only as a black man.
Croom was rushed by ambulance to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he underwent surgery and was listed today in good condition, a spokeswoman said.
Kenneth McDonald Allen, 46, was knocked to the ground at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the 600 block of Devereaux Street, then struck several times and robbed of $300, police said. Allen did not need hospital treatment. The assailant was described only as a black man.
Driver flees, then surrenders
A driver fled from a predawn collision Sunday on Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway, the U.S. 70 bypass, but later surrendered to Goldsboro police.
Francisous Andries Johannes Koekkoek Jr. of Rosewood Drive was charged with felony hit and run and reckless driving. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $5,000 secured bond.
The report said a westbound auto that was driven by William Earl Hewett, 58, of Homestead Drive was struck from behind by another car. Hewett's car was knocked across the median and the eastbound lanes until it ran off the left side and overturned. The other driver fled.
Damages were estimated at $10,000 in the collision at 1:52 a.m. Sunday near the North William Street exit.
Meanwhile, a motorcyclist was injured in wreck at 12:17 p.m. Sunday on U.S. 117 Alternate near Northeast Church Road, the Highway Patrol said.
Romulus Detric Stahl, 26, of Dogwood Street was released after emergency-room treatment. He was charged with exceeding a safe speed after the bike had run off the right side in a curve, overturned and struck a ditch. Damage was put at $3,000 to the motorcycle.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*Gunshots damaged a truck hood Saturday, deputies said. The owner, Josh Kirby of Pikeville, set damage at $700. The damage followed a domestic dispute among several people at a home on Faro Road.
*Two DVD players were stolen between Friday and Saturday after a door was pried open at a home in the 900 block of Durham Lake Road, deputies said. The residents, Christine Holmes and Charlene Holmes, put a $60 value on each DVD. Damage was set at $100.
Thefts
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A thief smashed a window at the Trade Mart convenience store at 400 E. Ash St. Sunday and stole 10 packs of cigarettes, police said. The cigarettes were valued at $32. No damage estimate was listed.
*A Goldsboro man reported that he left his car running Saturday, then went in the Trade Mart at 400 E. Ash St. and returned to find his car gone, police said. Bobby Stocks said his blue, two-door 1992 Ford Probe was worth $2,000. Almost 10 hours elapsed between the time of the theft at 12:25 a.m. and the report of the stolen car at 10 a.m., police said.
*A disabled four-door, burgundy 1992 Buick LeSabre was stolen between Wednesday and Friday from a repair shop at 303 E. Holly St., police said. The owner, Ayed Husni Mohammad Hamdan of Goldsboro, put a $4,000 value on the car.
Three charges
A 23-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Friday by Goldsboro police and charged with three felony offenses.
Milton Sabitino Smith of South Randolph Street was charged with breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $5,000 secured bond.
