Building fire
An oven caught fire Thursday night at Uchiyama America at 494 Arrington Bridge Road, causing about $30,000 in damages, a fire official said.
The room was filled with smoke from burning rubber, and the building had to be evacuated, Arrington Volunteer Fire Chief Randy Rodgers said.
A sprinkler system put out the fire that was confined to one room. Rodgers said.
Fourteen volunteers from Arrington, about 10 from Mar Mac and eight from Dudley answered the 5:45 p.m. alarm with a total of 10 trucks. Rodgers later asked for Indian Springs and Thoroughfare to assist in ventilating the building. They remained until about 9 p.m.
Some workers returned later to their jobs on the other side of the plant. But Rodgers said the damaged oven was not expected to be repaired for a while.
Car stolen
A $30,000 car was stolen Thursday night from a Maryland woman who was visiting friends on Stoney Manor Drive, according to a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report.
April Marie Yapana of Fort Washington, Md., said that as she stopped in a driveway, two masked men yanked her from her silver 2003 Mercedes ML 350 and drove away. Ms. Yapana said she did not know the suspects and described them only as being black and wearing dark clothing.
A short time later, at 12:50 a.m., the car was found wrecked at Wayne Memorial Drive and Country Day Road. Two black men were seen running from the overturned car.
A Goldsboro police report said the eastbound driver was going too fast to make a left turn onto Wayne Memorial Drive and lost control of the car. The car jumped a curb and rolled over into some trees.
Damage was estimated at $25,000 to the car that was registered to Vilma V. Yapana of Fort Washington, Md.
3 hurt in wrecks
Three people were injured and damages were estimated at $21,770 in four recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, the Highway Patrol reported.
*Damages were estimated at $5,000 in a two-car collision at 8:20 a.m. Wednesday at U.S. 117 Alternate and Alert Cable Road, the Highway Patrol said. Brandy Nicole Allen, 18, of Alert Cable Road, Dudley, was charged with a safe-movement violation and no operator's license. The report said the eastbound car that Ms. Allen was driving had collided with a northbound auto that was driven by Reginald Devon Grimes, 31, of Indian Springs Road, Mount Olive.
*A westbound driver was injured in a two-vehicle, rear-end crash at 5:20 p.m. Tuesday at Tommy's Road and U.S. 117, the Highway Patrol said. Donald Grantham, 55, of Nor Am Road, Pikeville, was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, the report said, but his condition was not immediately available. A following motorist, Thomas Mitchell Kelley, 31, of N.C. 111 North, was charged with failure to reduce speed. Damages were set at $70.
*A driver was injured and damages were estimated at $8,700 in a three-car collision at 3:10 p.m. Tuesday on U.S. 117 near Duck Pond Lane, the Highway Patrol said. Heather Ashley Edwards, 17, of Winding Branch Avenue, Fremont, was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, the report said, but her condition was not immediately available. A following driver, Casey Marie Sutton, 17, of Mount Carmel Church Road, Pikeville, was charged with failure to reduce speed. Ms. Edwards and the other driver, Tyler Andrew Mills, 18, of Farmingdale Drive, Pikeville, had stopped for traffic, the report said.
*A driver was injured and his car was demolished in a wreck at 11:36 p.m. Sunday on U.S. 13 near Weaver Road, the Highway Patrol said. George Harrison Duvall, 45, of Four Oaks was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, the report said, but his condition was not immediately available. He was charged with exceeding a safe speed. His car had run off the left side, struck a power pole and two trees, the report said. The car was valued at $8,000.
Rings stolen
Diamond rings were stolen Thursday from two stores in Berkeley Mall, Goldsboro police reported.
A gold diamond ring, valued at $5,000, was stolen between noon and 3:30 p.m. from Daughtry's Jewelers. An employee said he was helping another customer when the suspect grabbed the ring, replaced it with another and fled. The theft was not discovered until about three hours later.
The suspect was described only as being a black man, about 5-feet-11 and 175 pounds with long black hair in dreadlocks. He wore cream pants and a multi-colored coat.
A white gold ring with a diamond cluster was stolen at about 3:25 p.m. from JC Penneys. The thief reached into an unlocked display case, grabbed the ring and fled, the report said.
The suspect was described only as a black woman. The ring was valued at $656.
Assault charge
A 33-year-old woman was arrested Thursday by Goldsboro police and charged with the assault of a child.
Charlotte Frederick Wilson of Indian Springs Road, Dudley, was charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. She was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $10,000 secured bond.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*Four gas heaters, copper wiring and two window frames were stolen between Oct. 1 and Thursday from a rental home in the 600 block of Simmons Street, police said. Two doors also were damaged. The owner, Leonard Smith of Goldsboro, estimated the value of the stolen property at $3,350 and damages at $200.
*Two five-gallon water jugs, filled with about $1,000 in change, were stolen between Wednesday and Thursday from a home in the 800 block of North Virginia Street, police said. Niagra D. Wilkins of Middlesex said she had left the jugs while they were painting the house.
*A television was stolen between Tuesday and Thursday after a window was smashed at a home in the 600 block of North Daisy Street, police said. The resident, John Adams, put a $170 value on the TV and set damage at $30.
Thefts
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*About $200 in rolled and loose quarters were stolen between Wednesday and Thursday from Suggs Auto Sales at 4685 U.S. 117 North, Pikeville, sheriff's deputies said. The thief may have pried open a door to get inside.
*A washer and a dryer were stolen between Nov. 18 and Thursday from a rental home in the 600 block of Pineview Cemetery Road, deputies said. The property, valued at $800, is owned by Delores Cardinale of Connecticut.
