Assaults
A man and his wife were assaulted and robbed and two other people were assaulted in separate incidents Sunday, according to reports filed with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and Goldsboro police.
William Eddie Hinson, 32, told deputies that he heard three men, one armed with a rifle, at about 9 p.m. shake the door handle to his home on Hare Road. Hinson looked through a peep hole and then the suspects damaged the door to get inside, the report said.
The suspects then pointed the firearm at the head of Hinson's wife and Hinson ran to a neighbor's home, the report said. One suspect then heard Hinson say the neighbors were coming. The suspects then grabbed about $200 to $300 from the victims, took the keys to Hinson's car and fled, the report said.
Damage to the door was estimated at $200.
The suspects were described as black and 25 to 30 years old. The gunman was described as 6-feet and 200 pounds with short hair and brown eyes. He wore a black jacket with a hood, black jeans and white shoes.
Another assault victim, Anthony Allen Faircloth, 30, of LaGrange, reported that he was stabbed at about 7 p.m. in a home on Covey Drive. He said he had argued with the resident over a beer that Faircloth's brother had taken from the resident's refrigerator.
Faircloth then fought with the other man and was stabbed in the stomach, the report said. Faircloth was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was listed today in stable condition in intensive care, a spokeswoman said.
The third victim, Gregory Suggs, 16, of Goldsboro told police that he was wounded at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday in the 1200 block of Olivia Lane. He said he was walking home from a store about a block away and saw a small car traveling east and then heard someone yell something and fire five gunshots.
One shot grazed Suggs' head, the report said. The police report said he was taken by ambulance to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released. But the hospital had no record of his being treated, a spokeswoman said.
Drug charges
A weekend traffic stop by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office resulted in the arrest of five men on felony drug charges and the recovery of a stolen firearm.
Deputies responded to a shots-fired call at about 3:45 p.m. Sunday, found the suspects' pickup truck at N.C. 111 and Ditchbank Road and stopped it at N.C. 111 and N.C. 581, or Bill Lane Boulevard.
The firearm was seized and was reported stolen from Jefferson County in Indiana. Ten grams of powdered cocaine were seized by Deputies Kenneth Grice and Matt Miller and Walnut Creek Police Officer Brian Beldin.
Francisco Peralta Contreras, 38, of Eagles Nest Road, Dudley, was charged with possession of a stolen firearm, possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine and misdemeanor carrying a concealed weapon. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $10,000 bond.
Four other passengers who were identified as Carlos Garcia Cordero, Vidal Mata Mundo, Jesus Mata Mundo and Victor Rubio Anguiano also were charged with possession of cocaine. Their ages and addresses were not immediately available.
House fires
A burning candle in a family room was blamed Saturday for a fire that caused an estimated $30,000 in damages to a home at 609 Rudolph Street, according to a Goldsboro Fire Department report.
No one was injured at Cynthia Potter's home.
Fifteen firefighters answered the 1:08 a.m. call with three engines, a ladder and a command car. They needed about an hour and a half to put out the fire, search and ventilate the home, investigate the cause and finish salvage work. The candle ignited furniture and fabric, and the fire was confined to the room, the report said.
Damage was estimated at $20,000 to the home and $10,000 to the contents. The one-floor home was valued at $65,000 and contents were valued at $15,000, the report said.
A second fire on Sunday caused about $1,000 in damages to a home at 367 Governor Aycock Road, fire officials said. Unattended cooking was blamed, Assistant Fremont Fire Chief Danny Tillman said.
Fremont, Pikeville and Antioch volunteers answered the 11:45 a.m. alarm to Dwayne Warrick's home.
False pretense
A 26-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Sunday by Goldsboro police and charged with felony obtaining property by false pretense and three misdemeanors.
Ethan Scott Sellers of Harding Drive was accused of concealing property under his jacket and trying to leave the Lowe's Home Improvement store at 1202 N. Berkeley Blvd., the report said. When he tried to walk away, Officer Steve Powers stopped him.
Store employees then reported that Sellers also had tried to use a stolen credit card and stolen checks to buy a gift card.
The stolen checks belonged to Amanda Pollard of Winterville, and the stolen credit card belonged to Judy Pollard of Winterville, the report said. The stolen property was recovered.
Sellers also was charged with possession of stolen goods, shoplifting and carrying a concealed weapon. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $20,000 secured bond.
Accidents
Damages were estimated at $24,000 in two recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Both vehicles were demolished in a collision at 4:33 a.m. Saturday on U.S. 70 West and the entrance road to the Little River Shopping Center, Goldsboro police said. One eastbound driver, John Carson Williams, 33, of Sleepy Creek Road, Dudley, was charged with reckless driving and failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. The other driver, Lou W. McWhorter, 54, of Richmond, Va., had stopped for a traffic light. Williams hold told police that he may have fallen asleep and could not stop in time. The vehicles were valued at $16,000.
*Damages were estimated at $8,000 in a two-car, head-on, hit-and-run crash at 9:49 p.m. Thursday at Camp Jubilee and Zion Church roads, the Highway Patrol said. A northbound car tried to pass another vehicle on Camp Jubilee Road and slammed head-on into the second car that was driven by Ramon Arroyo Guillen, 26, of Peartree Road, Mount Olive, the report said. The other driver fled. The car was registered to Erin Campsos of Jimmie Jones Lane, Mount Olive, the report said.
Thefts
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*Three digital camcorders, a digital camera and a video-game player were stolen between Saturday and dawn today from Rent-a-Center at 1809-A Wayne Memorial Drive, police said. The thief had smashed a door glass and a display case, the report said. The stolen property was valued at $4,554. No damage estimate was listed.
*Diamond jewelry and video-game equipment were stolen Saturday after a door was damaged at an apartment in the 700 block of South Randolph Street, police said. The resident, Tristen McKinnon, estimated the value of the stolen property at $4,080 and damage at $200.
*Forty music compact discs and a CD case were stolen between Friday and Sunday after a car window was shattered in a parking lot at 2215 E. Ash St., police said. The owner, Kevin W. Simonson of Goldsboro, estimated the stolen property's value at $615 and damage at $125.
*Jewelry, a saw and $150 were stolen between Oct. 10 and Sunday from a home in the 500 block of North Leslie Street, police said. The resident, Karen Creech, put a $3,475 value on the property.
*A green 1994 Chevrolet pickup truck was stolen between Friday and Saturday from the 500 block of North John Street, police said. The truck, valued at $1,500, was owned by Alice G. Edwards of Princeton, the report said.
*A laptop computer was stolen Saturday from an unlocked home in the 1000 block of Maple Street, police said. The resident, Curtis Holland Morgan, said it was worth $1,200.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*A black 1995 Chevrolet Suburban was found burned on a dirt driveway in the 800 block of Sandhill Drive, sheriff's deputies said. The sport utility vehicle, valued at $16,000, was left on blocks with the tires and rims missing. The owner was listed as Guillermo Bravo Guzman of Mount Olive.
*A 1962 Chevrolet flat-bed truck and an International Scout truck were stolen between Nov. 11 and Friday from the 100 block of Sleepy Creek Drive, sheriff's deputies said. The owner, John Arthur Williamson of Dudley, put a $2,050 value on the trucks.
*Four tires were slashed, a side window and the front windshield were broken and the hood of a car were damaged between Thursday and Friday in the 500 block of Watery Branch Church Road, deputies said. The owner, Betty Joyce Shackleford of Eureka, estimated the damages at $1,050.
