Terri D. Cummings has joined the United States Army under the Delayed Entry Program. The program gives young men and women the opportunity to delay entering active duty for up to one year.
The enlistment gives the new soldier the option to learn a new skill, travel and become eligible to receive as much as $50,000 toward a college education. After completion of basic military training, soldiers receive advanced individual training in their career job specialty prior to being assigned to their first permanent duty station. The recruit qualifies for an $11,000 enlistment bonus.
Cummings, a 2005 high school graduate of James Sprunt Community College, has reported to Fort Jackson, S.C., for active duty.
She is the daughter of Terry and Donna Cummings of Faison.

Lewis, a 2005 graduate of North Lenior High School, has reported to Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C., for active duty.
She is the daughter of Kevin D. and Shirley L. Lewis of LaGrange.
Airman 1st Class Justin C. Cline has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.
During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations.
In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
A 2005 graduate of Rosewood High School, he is the son of Ronald Cline of Smithfield and Melanie Brady of Goldsboro.
Spc. Justin Herring, an administration specialist with the headquarters company of the 230th Support Battalion of the North Carolina National Guard, volunteered to help in Louisiana's relief and recovery. He is one of 26,000 troops that have been mobilized before and after Hurricane Katrina and Rita hit the Gulf Coast. National Guardsmen from all 50 states and 4 territories have responded and sent troops to help in the crisis. He is the son of Will and Edna Herring.
Spc. Jose Collazo, a chemical mechanic repairmen with Charlie Company of the 230th Support Battalion of the North Carolina National Guard, volunteered to help in the relief and recovery of New Orleans. He is one of 26,000 troops that have been mobilized before and after Hurricane Katrina and Rita hit the Gulf Coast. National Guardsmen from all 50 states and 4 territories have responded and sent troops to help in the crisis. Collazo is employed at Carolina Turkeys.
Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Phillipian R. Stewart, the son of Linda F. and Lawyer B. Stewart of Dudley, and his fellow shipmates returned to sea after their two-month long inport period while assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan.
Sailors worked long hours with civilian contractors to complete 85 contractor jobs, 246 ship repair jobs and more than 700 ship's force jobs to ensure the ship was ready to get under way. The Kitty Hawk Strike Group is the largest strike group in the Navy and is composed of the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk, Carrier Air Wing 5, guided-missile cruisers USS Chancellorsville and USS Cowpens, and destroyer Squadron 15.
Stewart is a 1994 graduate of Southern Wayne Senior High School.
