From staff reports

There are only a couple days left to get an on-time entry in for this year's Goldsboro Jaycees Christmas Parade.

But if you are a fourth- through sixth-grader, you can still convince the Jaycees you would be a great parade grand marshal.

The deadline for parade entries is Saturday, but for those who need additional time, the Jaycees will accept applications until Nov. 30 with an additional fee.

Entries postmarked or received between Sunday and Nov. 26 will be charged a $25 late fee. Entries that arrive from Nov. 27 to Nov. 30 will pay an additional $50.

No entries will be accepted after 5 p.m. Nov. 30.

The theme for this year's parade, which is scheduled for 4 p.m. Dec. 3 in downtown Goldsboro, is "The Gift of Giving."

And as a special addition, the Jaycees are looking for a young person to be this year's parade grand marshals.

The Jaycees are sponsoring essay and poster contests to determine who would be the best choice to help Santa Claus kick off this year's holiday season in Wayne County.

To participate, all the students have to do is pick one line of the Jaycees' creed and then give their thoughts, feelings and opinions about that line. Their entries, either in the form of a poster or an essay, will be judged on how well they express themselves.

The Jaycees creed can be found on the organization's Web site: www.goldborojaycees.org.

The rules are:

* Students must be in the fourth through sixth grades.

* Essays must be 250 words or less, handwritten or typed.

* Posters must be 8-by-11.5 inches.

* A fee of $5 must accompany each entry.

* Entries must be postmarked by Nov. 28.

* Entries should be mailed to Goldsboro Jaycees, P.O. Box 463, Goldsboro, N.C. 27533.

The winning grand marshals will be announced Dec. 2.

For more information about the poster/essay contest, call Beth Casey at 734-6231, Ext. 113.

Proceeds from the contest and the parade will be used for Jaycee charities and service projects throughout the community.

Participants must register to be able to participate in the parade. Entry forms are available online at www.goldborojaycees.org, or at the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce at 308 N. William St.

For more information about the parade route, the staging area and the lineup will be posed on the Jaycees' Web site, too.
