MOC plans homecoming

MOUNT OLIVE -- Hundreds of alumni are expected to return to Mount Olive College this weekend to participate in the school's annual homecoming weekend.
Festivities begin Friday morning at 7:30 a.m. with a business breakfast briefing in the Hennessee Room of the Lois K. Murphy Regional Center. Guest speaker Charles Broadwell, publisher of the Fayetteville Observer, will discuss "Eastern North Carolina: Behind the Headlines." The cost is $15 per person. College Business Associates and one guest may attend free.
The Ninth Annual Alumni Scholarship Golf Tournament will be held at the Southern Wayne Country Club. The super ball tournament will have a shotgun start at noon. Cost for the event is $48 per person. To register a team, contact Tim Woodard.
At noon, the second annual Alumni Science and Mathematics Luncheon, hosted by the Henderson Science Club, will meet in the Hennessee room of the Murphy Center. JaNae Joyner, a 2002 graduate of Mount Olive College and currently a student at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, will speak about "The Doorways of Life: Keep Knocking." Cost for lunch is $5 per person. Guests are invited to go through the serving line in the cafeteria before the presentation begins.
The 40th annual Pickle Classic basketball tournament will be held Friday and Saturday. Friday night's games begins at 6 p.m. with UNC-Pembroke vs. Chowan, followed by Mount Olive vs. Lees-McRae at 8. The consolation game will start at 4:30 Saturday afternoon, with the championship game at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance and cover all four games. Children under 4 are admitted free. Following the games will be an alumni-student pizza party.
The Alumni Silent Auction will take place from noon on Friday until 6 p.m. on Saturday. It will be a friendly competition between classes, focus groups, and individuals to raise money for the college's Alumni Endowed Scholarship Fund.
The Henderson Science Club and the Recreation Majors Club are jointly hosting a Cystic Fibrosis 2K walk and 5K run on Saturday morning at 8:30. The class of '79 is sponsoring the Jan Brewer Memorial Cystic Fibrosis Walk.
At 10 a.m. on Saturday, alumni awards will be presented in the Hennessee room of the Murphy Center. Among those presentations will be the college's Alumnus of the Year. Immediately following will be a buffet lunch for the MOC classes of '55, '65, '75, '80, '85, '95, '00 and '05 with special entertainment by the Mount Olive College Singers.
The sixth annual Criminal Justice Seminar will begin at 1 p.m. in Rodgers Chapel. Angel Funk of the Class of 2003 will lead a session on domestic violence.
A workshop titled 'Tips for Wise Financial Planning' will take place in the Poole Administration conference room. All former and present teachers who attended Mount Olive College during their educational careers, are encouraged to attend the teacher "Education Seminar." Located in the Hennessee room of the Murphy Center, the seminar entitled, "How to Keep Your Teaching Juicy!" will be led by Fanette Hines Entzminger of the Class of '76.
On Saturday afternoon there will be an art exhibit entitled "Landscapes of America" by Jeff Minnishk of the Class of '99. It will be held in Laughinghouse Hall and is open to the public.
The Alumni Lifelong Learning Opportunities are short classes taught by MOC faculty and staff. Alumni will be able to revisit some of their old classrooms and professors as well as meet some newer faculty faces. Classes are designed for both adults and children. The topics include family photography, led by Willis Brown, in his 39th year of teaching at MOC; a travelogue on Greece and a presentation on how to put together an alumni travel program. Alan Lamm, Class of '79 and professor of history, will speak on the Civil War. Children of alumni will learn and perform a song with the MOC Singers led by Dr. Larry Oldham. They will also dissect barn owl pellets, listen to Bible stories and create works of art.
A pig pickin' and old-fashioned barbecue will start at 5 p.m. on Saturday. Following the Pickle Classic championship game there will be a Beach Music Blast at 9 p.m. featuring Sammy O'Banion and Mardi Gras.
The homecoming festivities will culminate Sunday morning with a memorial service at the Alumni Cross Walk at 10 a.m., followed by a worship service in Rodgers Chapel. Leading the memorial service will be Alice Wade Davis of the Class of '03 and Jack Paramore of the Class of '56. A buffet lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. For reservations, contact Dianne Riley.
