Student charged with gun on school grounds
A teenager was arrested Monday by a Wayne County sheriff's deputy with a search dog and charged with several felony firearms violations on school grounds.
Jason Tyrone Cox, 17, of Kornegay Drive, Dudley, was charged with possession of two firearms at Southern Wayne High School, possession of a firearm by a minor and altering the serial number of a firearm.
The firearms were recovered in Cox's vehicle that was in the school parking lot. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $5,000 secured bond.
12 hurt in wrecks
Twelve people were injured and damages were estimated at $38,700 in seven recent traffic accidents in Wayne County, the Highway Patrol reported.
*A driver was injured in a one-car wreck at 11 a.m. Saturday on Miller's Chapel Road near Thoroughfare Road, the Highway Patrol said. Brandon Elliot Milliken, 21, of Bryan Boulevard was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. He was charged with reckless driving. Damage was set at $2,000.
*Damage was estimated at $7,500 in a one-car wreck at 1:39 a.m. Saturday on Miller's Chapel Road near New Hope Road, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Alfred James Peterson Jr., 27, of Miles Lane, was charged with exceeding a safe speed.
*Damages were estimated at $6,000 in a two-vehicle collision at 7:40 a.m. Thursday on U.S. 117 near Big Daddy's Road, the Highway Patrol said. One northbound driver, Cynthia M. Files, 52, of Veachs Mill Road, Warsaw, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. The other motorist, Noble Granger Blackman IV, 47, of Wilson, had stopped because of traffic.
*Six people were injured and damages were set at $5,000 in a two-vehicle crash at 10:26 a.m. Thursday on U.S. 117 Alternate near Outlaw Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Julia B. Gurganus, 53, of Old Grantham Road, and her passenger, Cleveland Boswell, 55, of Legion Lake Road, Dudley, and the other driver, Hermindo Gomez Perez, 29, and his passengers, Rebecca Velasquez Matias, 19, Kevin Octavius Gomez-Matias, 1, and Andy James Gomez-Matias, 2 months, all of Harding Drive, Seven Springs, were released after emergency-room treatment. Ms. Gurganus was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. Gomez Perez was charged with not having an operator's license.
*Three people were injured in a two-vehicle collision at 3 p.m. Thursday at Old Mount Olive Road and Dell Drive. One driver, Reginald Karl Tanner, 54, of Eagle Ridge Road, Dudley, and his passenger, Anthony Boyette, 32, of Old Mount Olive Road, Dudley, and the other driver, William Earl Pearsall, 43, of Pinehill Road, Dudley, were released after emergency-room treatment. Pearsall was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. Damages were put at $3,900.
*Damages were estimated at $10,000 in a two-car crash at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday on U.S. 70 near Luby Smith Road, the Highway Patrol said. A westbound driver, Jonathan Mark Wuntke, 27, of White Oak Road, was charged with reckless driving. The other motorist was identified as Sheri R. Styron, 41, of Pine Level.
*Two people were injured in a two-vehicle wreck at 1:22 p.m. Nov. 4 on Indian Springs Road near Arrington Bridge Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Laura Jean Kuhn, 27, of Clayton, and her passenger, Akua Jackson, 27, of South Running Deer Circle, Dudley, were released after emergency-room treatment. The other motorist, David Earl Beasley, 16, of Kiowa Drive, Pikeville, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end wreck. Damages were fixed at $4,300.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*Basketball trading cards, three pairs of tennis shoes and a cell phone were stolen between Nov. 2 and Monday from a home in the 100 block of Timothy Street, sheriff's deputies said. The thief had damaged a window to get inside, the report said. The resident, Laramzia Wardale Burton, estimated the value of the stolen property at $750 and damage at $50.
*Two liquid oxygen tanks and two torch kits were stolen between Friday and Monday from a farm in the 800 block of Pineview Cemetery Road, deputies said. The resident, Randy Lee McCullen, put a $1,500 value on his property.
*A black American Challenger go-cart and a laptop computer were stolen between Saturday and Monday from a storage building in the 2900 block of U.S. 70 West, deputies said. The resident, Larry David Bill, said his property was worth $1,825.
*A red 1994 Chevrolet pickup truck was stolen between Sunday and Monday from the 2000 block of N.C. 222 West, deputies said. The owner and resident, Vernon Lee Howell, said the key had been left inside. The truck was valued at $4,500.
Jewelry stolen
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*Jewelry, two high school class rings, 60 $2 bills, $20 in old silver coins and $23 in cash were stolen between Sunday and Monday from a home in the 100 block of Quail Drive, police said. The resident, T.C. Campbell, said the jewelry included a woman's gold diamond ring, a man's diamond ring, another diamond ring, five wedding bands and a pinky ring. The jewelry and school rings were valued at $6,700. The school rings were from Micro High School and Brighton, Mass.
*A diamond bracelet was stolen between Sept. 10 and Monday from a home in the 200 block of South Spence Avenue, police said. The resident, J.P. Woodard, put a $1,399 value on it.
Break-in solved
A residential break-in in western Wayne County was solved Monday with the arrest of a 53-year-old Goldsboro woman.
Phyllis Louise Boyer of Peggy Lane was charged with breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods. She was accused of stealing checks, a shotgun and a video cassette recorder, Detective Sgt. Rick Farfour said. Her bond was set at $10,000. Some stolen property has been recovered and returned to the owner.
Six charges
A 38-year-old woman was arrested Monday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with six felony offenses.
Tracy Michelle Whitfield of Nancy Drive, Dudley, was charged with three counts each of forgery and uttering. She was accused of forging and passing stolen checks, Detective Sgt. Rick Farfour said. Her bond was set at $7,000.
Woods fire
A woods fire off Salem Country Lane has been referred to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office for a further investigation.
Belfast volunteer firefighters and the N.C. Forestry Service began an investigation of the Sunday afternoon blaze. A resident said she saw a pickup truck in the area.
Missing
A 16-year-old girl was reported missing Monday by relatives to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. Denisha M. Sutton of 110 Theo Drive was described as black, 5-feet-4 and 130 pounds with long black hair and brown eyes. She was seen last at 8 a.m. Monday. No clothing description was available.
Anyone with information on her location was asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 731-1481.
