Alert deputy finds
car, arrests pair
Wayne County Sheriff's Sgt. Sherwood Daly thought something was wrong Sunday when he saw two men in a car at a gas station on North Spence Avenue in Goldsboro.
Daly said one man turned the car around before Daly could check the license plate. The driver said the gas tank was on the other side and the second man had gone inside to pay for the gas. When Daly checked the car again, there was a broken window.
The other man ran outside from the store and jumped in the car, and the pair sped off. As they did Daly got the license tag, and the red 2003 Ford Focus had been reported stolen Nov. 3 from the owner's former home on Fleetwood Drive. The family had moved to Illinois in September and left a relative in charge of the car in Goldsboro.
Daly quickly stopped the car on Ash Street and arrested the two men. Peter Scott Dezern, 35, of West Seymour Drive and Herman Lee Wimbush, 35, of Danville, Va. They were charged with felony possession of a stolen car. Each was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $5,000 secured bond.
Man robbed
A 37-year-old man from Newton Grove was assaulted and robbed Saturday night of $600 and a 1994 car, according to Goldsboro police reports.
Macx Garcia told deputies that two Hispanic men displayed a long gun at 8 p.m. in the 900 block of U.S. 117 South, assaulted him, took the car and fled. He was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released, a spokeswoman said.
The white, two-door Chevrolet Cavalier was valued at $500.
Collision
Damages were estimated at $5,000 in a two-car collision at 5:25 p.m. Saturday at South Harding Drive and Harding Place, Goldsboro police said.
One southbound driver, Damira Travette Yelverton, 40, of Nelson Drive, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. The other driver was identified as Greg Douglas Pfeiffer, 24, of Remington Court.
