Man impersonates
police officer
The Wayne County Sheriff's Office is investigating a case in which a man on Sunday impersonated a law-enforcement officer.
A woman resident on Pecan Road told sheriff's deputies that the man came to her home and said her daughter had been in a serious traffic accident. The man said the woman should go to a funeral home to view the body in order to identify it. The suspect said he was an officer but did not give his name.
The suspect was described as being white, about 5-feet-10 to 6-feet tall and 180 to 200 pounds with a big build. He wore a dark uniform with sergeant stripes, a shoulder patch with an eagle and a hat similar to one worn by Goldsboro police. The suspect was driving a dark full-sized pickup truck, perhaps a Chevrolet Z71 or a Ford F-150.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 731-1481.
Drug arrest
A 19th person has been arrested by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad and charged with two felony drug offenses as a result of a year-long undercover drug campaign.
Maurice Hicks, 28, of South Church Street, Mount Olive, was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine and sale and delivery of cocaine. He also was held on an outstanding arrest order for a probation violation. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a secured bonds totaling $40,000.
Fifty-two charges were filed against 20 people in the campaign.
7 hurt in wrecks
Seven people were injured and damages were estimated at $56,000 in eight recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A sport utility vehicle that had been reported as stolen smashed into a house at 406 Creech St. at 12:25 a.m. today and the driver fled, Goldsboro police said. The report said the southbound auto jumped the curb on the left side, smashed through a chain-link fence, struck the left corner of a home and knocked a heating and air conditioning unit from its connections. The car stopped atop the unit with three wheels off the ground. No one was home. Damage was estimated at $5,000 to the home, occupied by Beulah Brewington, and $5,000 to the SUV. The registered owner, Heather Rae Huffman of Seaford, Del., had reported that her SUV had been stolen from the parking lot at the Best Western Goldsboro Inn at 801 E. Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway.
*Damages were estimated at $6,300 in a two-vehicle collision at 10:40 a.m. Sunday at South Andrews Avenue and East Elm Street, police said. A southbound driver, Annie Doris Artis, 61, of Palm Street, was charged with a stoplight violation. Her car collided with a westbound sport utility vehicle that was driven by Diane M. Wactor, 29, of Allen Street, the report said.
*A driver was injured and his pickup truck was demolished in a wreck at 8:20 p.m. Saturday at Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway and McLain Street, police said. Fernando Hernandez Vasquez, 27, of Countryview Drive was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. The report said he had run through a stop sign and the pickup crashed through a row of mail boxes and a fence and overturned. Vasquez was charged with suspicion of driving while impaired and a stop-sign violation. The truck was valued at $10,000.
*Three people were injured and damages were estimated at $6,000 in a two-car crash at 3:25 p.m. Friday on U.S. 13 near Hood Swamp Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Jessee Hines III, 56, of Olivia Lane, and his passengers, Horace James Godwin, 55, of Maple Street and George Roger Hargrove, 72, of New Hope Road, were released after emergency-room treatment. The other motorist, Mildred B. Lancaster, 85, of Pecan Road, Dudley, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash.
*Damages were estimated at $6,000 in a two-vehicle collision at 9:36 a.m. Friday on U.S. 70 near Claridge Nursery Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Dewey Edward Wood, 61, of Micro, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. The other eastbound driver was identified as Gerald Maxwell Adams, 50, of Lumberton.
*Damages were set at $6,500 in a three-vehicle crash at 9:36 a.m. Friday on U.S. 70 near Claridge Nursery Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Dotty W. Waters, 63, of Westwood Drive, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. The other motorists were listed as Karin Elizabeth Fields, 58, of Cary and Teresa S. Tyner, 41, of Oakland Church Road, Princeton.
*Three people were injured in a one-car wreck at 7:27 a.m. Thursday on Big Daddy's Road near Lancaster Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Latoya Faith Campbell, 20, and her passengers, Fronisha Campbell, 17, and Michael Eatmon, 14, all of Big Daddy's Road, Pikeville, were released after emergency-room treatment. The report said the driver said she had been blinded by the sun and the car ran off the right side and struck a ditch. Damage put at $200.
*Damages were estimated at $11,000 in a two-vehicle collision at 7:45 a.m. Thursday on Billy Price Road near N.C. 55, the Highway Patrol said. A southbound driver, Jose Donaldo Cruz Ordonez, 26, of Cabin Creek Drive, Seven Springs, was charged with driving left of center. The report said his car sideswiped a northbound sport utility vehicle that was driven by Trudy P. Shivar, 58, of Billy Price Road, Seven Springs.
Thefts
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*A 1988 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, a rifle, four boxes of ammunition, a revolver, a range finder and a cell phone were stolen between Friday and Saturday from the 2100 block of Rosewood Road, sheriff's deputies said. The resident and owner, Willard Ray Bridgers, said the truck was unlocked and the key was inside. The truck was valued at $2,000, and the other property was valued at $3,280.
*Two residents on Dog Pond Road, near Seven Springs, reported thefts, deputies said. A camera and $400 was stolen between Wednesday and Friday from C.T. Dail's home, and a video-game console and $100 was stolen from Christopher Hollingsworth's home. The camera was valued at $300, and the console was valued at $150. No sign of forced entry was reported at either home. A Lenoir County juvenile has admitted to the thefts.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A woman was assaulted Saturday night in the 200 block of East Elm Street and the male assailant then fired a gun several times in the air and fled, police said. The victim, Vernetta Hall of Goldsboro, told officers that the suspect had pointed a gun at her and then slapped her. The suspect was described only as a black man in his 40s.
*Three drink machines were damaged between Saturday and Sunday at Paradise Flea Market at 1016 N. William St. and an unknown amount of money was stolen, police said. Damages were put at $3,000.
*Six boxes of chicken wings, a case of boneless wings, five bags of chicken patties and a half-case of pies were stolen between Friday and Saturday from Kentucky Fried Chicken at 700 E. Ash St., police said. The thief had inflicted about $150 in damages to a door to get inside. The stolen food was valued at $497.
