Alert driver helps
police arrest man
An alert driver on Wednesday saw a man try to steal a first-aid kit from his truck in a supermarket parking lot and gave Goldsboro police a description of the suspect.
The suspect was arrested moments later and charged with other crimes as well.
Ray Ramos of LaGrange told police he saw the man reach into a Seegars Fence Co. truck that he was driving at about 9:20 a.m. in the Piggly Wiggly parking lot at 100 Lionel St.
After Ramos yelled at the man, the suspect pulled his arm out and walked away. Police were called, and officers Wayne Cannucci and Steve Harmon found the man and detained him until Ramos identified him.
After a further investigation, the man admitted that he had stolen cookies and ice cream sandwiches from the store. The food, valued at $4.48, was recovered and returned. Officers also seized brass knuckles from the him.
Donta Devon Broadhurst, 18, of East Elm Street was charged with felony breaking and-or entering, misdemeanor larceny and carrying a concealed weapon. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $1,500 secured bond.
Seven Springs VFD
not seeking money
SEVEN SPRINGS -- The Seven Springs Volunteer Fire Department is not seeking donations, officials said today.
Wayne County Sheriff Carey Winders said unknown people have been going door to door and asking for money for the department. He said the department is holding a fund raiser Saturday but is not asking for donations door to door.
"If you are approached, do not give them money, contact the Sheriff's Office at 731-1493 or Crime Stoppers at 735-2255 and give a description of the people and their vehicle," Winders said.
Women robbed
Two women were robbed Wednesday, and one was injured during separate holdups, according to Goldsboro police reports.
Melissa McCullen, 24, of Dudley was struck on the head with a bottle at about 3:45 p.m. in the 500 block of East Walnut Street and robbed of her purse that contained a wallet, $20 and personal papers, police said.
Ms. McCullen was taken by ambulance to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where she was treated and released, a spokeswoman said. The robber was described only as a black man.
Kamiyla Faatima Lofton, 18, of Goldsboro was handing a $100 bill to another woman at 11 a.m. at a fast-food restaurant in Berkeley Mall, police said. A black man grabbed the money and fled in a gray car.
The suspect was described as 5 feet 10 inches tall and 210 pounds with black hair in corn rows, black eyes and a scar on his face. He wore a white T-shirt and blue jeans.
Bicyclist injured
A bicyclist was struck by a hit-and-run car and injured at 6:01 p.m. Wednesday on East Walnut Street near Lionel Street, Goldsboro police said.
Michael Kildare Artis, 43, of East Walnut Street was taken by ambulance to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released, a spokeswoman said.
Artis gave police the license plate number of the car, but the address came back as a vacant house. Later police located the driver, Coreene Lynn-Marie Emrick, 35, of South Slocumb Street, and charged her with hit and run and driving while her license was revoked.
Damage was set at $25 to the bike. No damage estimate was reported for the car.
Truck shreds corn
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*A Nissan Frontier pickup truck with two bullet holes was found in a corn field near Genoa and Outlaw roads, sheriff's deputies said. The truck had inflicted about $5,000 in damages to the corn crop, the owner, Robert Eugene Kornegay of Dudley, reported. The truck was registered to Alphonso Polite Jr. of Outlaw Road, Dudley, reports said.
*Four tires and four 20-inch chrome rims were removed from a vehicle between Wednesday and dawn today in the 900 block of Genoa Road, deputies said. The resident, Rodney Jermain Lanier, put a $1,600 value on the missing property.
*Two cartons of cigarettes, 40 lighters, chewing gum and a case of sports drink were stolen between Monday and Wednesday from James I. Hill Grocery at 778 Herman Lane Road, Stantonsburg, deputies said. The stolen property was valued at $136.
*A gray, four-door 2001 Saab 9-3 was taken between Monday and Wednesday for a test drive from Deacon Jones Kia at 2077 U.S. 70 West and not returned, deputies said. The car was valued at $12,500.
Drug charge
A 30-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Wednesday night by Goldsboro police and charged with a felony drug offense at South Slocumb and East Pine streets.
John Thomas Williams Jr. of Crawford Street was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana. He also was held on an outstanding arrest order. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $7,500 secured bond.
Missing
Two teenaged girls were reported missing Wednesday by relatives to Wayne County authorities.
*Taylor Rose, 14, of 218 Parkwood Drive was described as white, 5 feet 7 inches tall and 110 pounds with curly blonde hair, blue eyes and a slim build. When she was seen last at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, she was wearing a white shirt, navy blue shorts and flip-flops.
*Amanda Marie Ross, 17, of 316 E. Holly St. was described as black, 5 feet 2 inches tall and 140 pounds with dark brown hair, dark brown eyes and a brown complexion. When she was seen last at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, she was wearing a black shirt, brown pants and black shoes.
