Mobile home fire
A mobile home at 741 Pecan Road was destroyed before dawn Monday in a fire of an undetermined cause, a fire official said.
Arrington Volunteer Fire Chief Randy Rogers said the single-wide home was engulfed in flames when he arrived.
A neighbor told sheriff's deputies that the home was OK about two hours earlier when she checked it. Another neighbor said he saw a large ball of fire in the center of the home and called 911.
The resident was not home, but was notified and arrived during the fire, Rogers said. No one was injured.
Seven Arrington firefighters answered the 3:50 a.m. call with two trucks, and seven Mar Mac volunteers assisted with three units.
The home, owned by Wendy J. Kohls, was valued at $16,000, Rogers said. The contents, valued at $3,000, also were destroyed. The Wayne County Red Cross chapter is assisting the family.
Rogers said Wayne County Emergency Services and the Sheriff's Office were investigating the cause of the fire.
Theft, drug charges
The arrest of a teenager from Florida on Monday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office led to felony drug charges.
Joshua Suarez, 19, of Orlando was arrested and charged with stealing $905 worth of property from a store in the mall. The property was recovered and returned. Detective then executed a search warrant for Suarez's motel room and found $266 worth of property that had been stolen from another store and $800 worth of marijuana. The property also was returned to the store.
Suarez was charged with two felony counts of possession of stolen property, one felony count each of possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana and maintaining a dwelling for the purpose of keeping and selling marijuana, and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $15,000 secured bond.
Two charged
An investigation of illegal drug activity during a traffic stop on East Elm Street led to the arrest of two men on other charges as well.
Goldsboro police discovered that the suspects' car had been reported stolen in Raleigh.
John Berry Moore, 40, of North Slocumb Street was charged with possession of cocaine, possession of a stolen vehicle and driving while his license was revoked. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail under $5,000 secured bond.
Donny Wayne Speight, 50, of Newport was wanted on a Pennsylvania fugitive warrant for a cocaine charge and vehicle larcenies in Raleigh and New Bern. He was charged with two felony counts of larceny and one felony count of embezzlement. He was jailed under $10,000 secured bond.
Drug charges
Two men were arrested during traffic stops by the Wayne County Sheriff's Aggressive Criminal Enforcement Team and charged with felony drug offenses.
Brian Danyel Summers, 26, of Beston Road, LaGrange, was arrested Saturday night in the Little River Shopping Center on U.S. 70 West. Officers seized 2.8 grams of cocaine and charged Summers with possession of cocaine. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $2,000 secured bond.
An unidentified passenger in Summers' car was charged in a citation with misdemeanor possession of marijuana.
Corey Desean Lewis, 23, was arrested Friday near his home on Norwayne School Road, Fremont. Five grams of cocaine and five grams of marijuana were seized. Lewis was charged with possession of cocaine and misdemeanor possession of marijuana. He was jailed under $10,000 secured bond.
Break-in charges
A 44-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Monday by Goldsboro police and charged with four felony offenses in connection with two break-ins.
Wilbert Bynum Jr., who did not disclose a home address, was charged with two counts of larceny and breaking and entering and breaking.
Bynum was accused of breaking into Perkins Motor Parts at 1107 S. George St. and a vehicle in the 900 block of South John Street. He also was held on outstanding arrest orders on other charges. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail under $51,600 secured bond.
Safe, $4,000 taken
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*A safe with about $4,000 and personal papers was stolen Monday from a home in the 700 block of Old Harvey Sutton Road near Mount Olive. Brian Jay Jeanette estimated the value of the stolen property at $150, in addition to the cash, and damage at $50.
*A laptop computer, a digital camera and a projector were stolen from two vehicles in the 1200 block of Franklin Street. Harold L. Isler Jr. put a $2,750 value on the items.
Sex charge
A 28-year-old man has been arrested by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with a felony first-degree sexual offense. Malcolm Lee Southerland of Emmaus Church Road, Dudley, was accused of assaulting a 15-year-old girl who was visiting a friend in the suspect's hom. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail under $100,000 secured bond.
Missing
A 16-year-old girl was reported missing Monday by relatives to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. Jasmine Monique Yelverton of 123 Tinderwood Drive was described as black, 5-feet-3 and 130 pounds with straight black hair and brown eyes.
When she was seen last at 6:45 a.m. Monday, she was wearing a flowery pink shirt and a blue skirt. She may be in a blue Honda Prelude. Anyone with information on her location was asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 731-1481.
Accidents
Two people were injured in one collision and damages were estimated at $8,500 in another crash in Wayne County, the Highway Patrol reported.
*Two people were injured at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Southern Wayne High School parking lot in a two-car collision in which no damages were reported, the troopers said. One driver, Ina Artis Grandy, 48, and her passenger, Derek Lamont Jones, 28, both of Lake Avenue, Dudley, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. The other motorist was identified as Phillip Steven Durham, 17, of Emmaus Church Road, Dudley.
*Damages were estimated at $8,500 in a two-vehicle crash at 5:15 p.m. Sept. 20 at U.S. 70 and Carolina Drive. Yong Hee Anderson, 26, of Creek Ridge Drive, was charged with failure to reduce speed.
Damage estimates
Damage estimates have been completed by the Highway Patrol in last week's collision involving a suspected drug dealer and two Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad cars and in a fatal crash at N.C. 111 and N.C. 55.
Damages were estimated at $4,200 in a three-vehicle collision involving two drug squad cars and a sport utility vehicle that they were chasing. The collision occurred Sept. 27 on New Hope Road near Twin Oaks Place. The driver of a Jeep, Corey Vashon Hill, 29, of Daly Boulevard, Mount Olive, was charged with numerous drug offenses. Damage was set at $1,200 to the Jeep. It was registered to Daddeanna Lerae Crawford of Daly Boulevard. No charges were filed in the chase by State Trooper J.S. Smith, the report said. Damage was estimated at $1,200 to Wayne County cars driven by Sgt. D.C. Johnson and Sgt. Max E. Staps.
Damages were set at $44,000 in a two-vehicle crash in which a driver who did not stop for a stop sign at N.C. 111 and N.C. 55 was killed. A westbound, 1985 Peterbilt tractor-trailer, driven by James Thomas Taylor Jr., 57, of Dogwood Lane, Faison, sustained about $40,000 in damages. The 1996 Plymouth that the victim was operating was destroyed. The car was valued at $4,000. No charges were filed by Trooper J.M. Holloman.
Carlos Humberto Gutierrez, 29, of Mill Run Village, Mount Olive, was killed in the Sept. 19 crash. The car that he was driving was registered to Efrain Ramires of Morristown, Tenn.
