Teaching Fellows applications available

High school seniors interested in becoming teachers are encouraged to apply for scholarships that would defray the cost of college.
The N.C. Teaching Fellows Commission announced that applications are available online for the 2005-2006 North Carolina Teaching Fellows scholarship/loan program.
Jo Ann Norris, associate executive director for the Public School Forum and administrator of the Teaching Fellows program, said the program was created by the General Assembly in 1986 in order to meet the increasing demand for top quality for teachers in public schools across the state.
Teaching Fellows receive a $26,000 scholarship loan from the state, payable in $6,500 annual increments. The full loan is forgiven after completion of four years of teaching in North Carolina public schools.
The program continues to be the top teacher-recruiting program in the country.
"The primary purpose of the program is to attract top high school seniors to become education majors and ultimately public school teachers," said Gladys Graves, director of the Teaching Fellow Program.
