Victim identified
in fatal collision
The victim in a collision Monday night at N.C. 55 and N.C. 111 has been identified by the Highway Patrol as Carlos Humberto Gutierrez, 29, of 108 Mill Run Village, Mount Olive.
The northbound car that Gutierrez was driving ran the stop sign on N.C. 111 and collided with an westbound tractor-trailer on N.C. 55, the Highway Patrol said.
The trucker, James Taylor, 48, of Faison, was not injured, a patrol spokesman said. He was driving his own rig. No charges were filed.
The traffic death was the 14th in 2005 on Wayne County roads.
Man is charged
in bank robbery
A 36-year-old man from New Bern was arrested Tuesday by Goldsboro police and charged with last week's holdup of the Wachovia Bank branch at 605 N. Berkeley Blvd.
David Rickland Banks was charged with felony common-law robbery, a holdup without the use of a weapon. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $100,000 secured bond. His first court appearance was scheduled for today to determine his legal representation.
Banks was arrested by New Bern police and turned over to Goldsboro police Investigator Chad Calloway. Special Agent Doug Rambaud of the FBI assisted in the investigation and arrest.
A lone gunman held up the bank at about 3 p.m. Friday and fled in a white vehicle from the Berkeley Mall parking lot. Two more suspects are being sought, Calloway said.
Head-on crash
Two drivers were injured and three vehicles were demolished before dawn today in a head-on collision on South Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway, the U.S. 117 bypass, at the bridge over West Grantham Street, Goldsboro police reported.
Meredith Dickerson, 31, of Tarheel Pine Drive, Dudley, and Susan T. Reinier, 40, of Darby Place were taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where they were listed in stable condition, a spokeswoman said.
Ms. Dickerson, who was driving south in the northbound lanes of the four-lane, divided highway at 1:44 a.m., was charged with suspicion of driving while impaired, reckless driving and an expired registration.
The report said that Ms. Dickerson's car struck Ms. Reinier's northbound van and a northbound auto that was driven by Christine Smith, 63, of Johnson Branch Road.
Ms. Dickerson's car was valued at $12,000, Ms. Reiner's van was valued at $14,000, and Ms. Smith's auto was valued at $4,000.
Pair charged
A couple was arrested Tuesday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with felony crimes in connection with a residential break-in on Morris Road in Nahunta.
Russell Stephen Ward, 35, and Robin Allen Darden, 40, both of R&M Circle, Fremont, were charged with breaking and entering and larceny. Ward was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $10,000 secured bond. Ms. Darden was jailed in lieu of a $3,000 secured bond.
Detective Sgt. Shawn Harris said some property has been recovered and the victims have been notified.
An investigation into other break-ins in northern Wayne County is continuing. Additional charges are possible, Harris said.
Women fight
Two women were injured Tuesday when they struck each other with a pipe in the 1400 block of Courtyard Circle, Goldsboro police reported.
Robin Renee Johnson, 41, and Jonell Butler, 22, were treated released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. No charges have been filed.
Machines damaged
Two drink machines were damaged between Monday and Tuesday at O'Quinn's Store at 3302 N.C. 55 East, Seven Springs, sheriff's deputies said. Damages were estimated at $1,800. The damage resulted from a failed attempt to break into the coin boxes, reports said.
Missing
A 14-year-old girl was reported missing Tuesday by relatives to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. Andrea Shanquel Broadie of 200 Hideaway Circle, Dudley, was described as black, 5-feet and 160 pounds with a heavy build, black hair in braids and brown eyes.
She was seen last at 5:10 p.m. Tuesday. No clothing description was available. Anyone with information on her location was asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 731-1481.
