The 4th Fighter Wing at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base is evacuating 36 to 41 jets because of Hurricane Ophelia, said Capt. Allen Herritage of the base Public Affairs office.
Herritage said officials are expecting winds of up to 50 knots.
The evacuating F-15E Strike Eagles will be flown to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, Ohio. The remaining jets will be put in hangars, Herritage said.
The 916th Air Refueling Wing will send three KC-135 Stratotankers to Dayton as well.
