A Grantham Elementary School first-grader was struck by a car while waiting for a school bus along Durham Lake Road this morning.
Michael Buchanan, 5, of 202 Timber Hollow Drive, Dudley, was being treated in the emergency room at Wayne Memorial Hospital, said Highway Patrolman J.S. Smith, who investigated the accident.
No charges were filed against the driver, Shelby Jean Ford of Durham Lake Road.
Smith said Ford was traveling north when she saw the boy dart out into the road. She swerved to avoid him and ran off the road, struck a driveway culvert, brick wall, fence and landed in a ditch, according to witnesses. She also was being treated for minor injuries.
Smith said Buchanan was waiting for the morning bus along with several other children when the accident occurred. He said witnesses said the boy had already run out into the road, narrowly avoiding another car, before the accident.
Smith said the boy was apparently struck by a mirror on the side of the car and that he believed the boy would be all right. Officials at Wayne Memorial would not comment on his injuries or condition at press time, saying he was still being treated.
