House fire
A neighborly deed turned bad Thursday night and led to a kitchen fire that caused about $60,000 in damages to a home at 2005 Glenhaven Lane, a fire official said.
Assistant Fire Chief Jerry Langston said a neighbor came to James Davis' house to borrow a hoe, and Davis thought he had turned his stove off. But instead, he turned it on wide open, Langston said.
"The kitchen caught fire, and he went back in to put it out but could not," Langston said. "He tried to call the Fire Department with his cell phone but it was dead. That delayed our response. By the time we got there, the kitchen was fully involved, and fire was coming out of a window."
Fifteen firefighters answered the 6:44 p.m. call with three engines, a ladder and a command car. They controlled the fire within 25 minutes and remained for more than hour longer to investigate the cause and finish salvage work.
Damage was estimated at $40,000 to the home and $20,000 to the contents. The one-floor, brick home was valued at $95,000, and contents were valued at $30,000, Langston said.
Car destroyed
A car was destroyed Thursday in a fire caused by a faulty power steering unit, according to a Goldsboro police report.
The driver, Melody Jean Barnes of Fremont, said her car always smokes because of a power steering leak that she had tried to tape shut. After she stopped at a relative's home, she looked outside and saw her car on fire.
Goldsboro firefighters answered the 4:30 p.m. call and put out the fire. But the 1993 Pontiac Grand Am, valued at $1,500, was declared a total loss.
Firearms stolen
Fourteen firearms, valued at almost $10,000, were stolen Thursday from a home in the 2200 block of Grantham School Road, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office reported.
The resident, Steven Ray Sullivan, reported the theft of a rifle, a shotgun and 10 handguns with a combined value of $7,330. A small plastic gun box also was taken. James Allen Sullivan of Mount Olive said his two firearms, valued at $2,400, were stolen.
The thief had pried open a door to get inside and then smashed a gun cabinet to get most of the weapons. Damages were estimated at $150.
Sheriff's deputies also are investigating these reports:
*Two blue Yamaha dirt bikes were stolen between Wednesday and Thursday from the 300 block of Bertie Pierce Road, deputies said. The resident and owner, Kim R. Sauls, said the bikes were worth $1,200.
*A total of $174 was stolen Thursday after a thief entered a window and broke through an interior wall at the EZ Mart Tackle Shop at 2049 U.S. 117 South, deputies said. The owner, Gary Bevell of Goldsboro, estimated damage at $25.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A combination radio and compact disc player and a CD were stolen between Wednesday and Thursday after a truck window was smashed in the 1100 block of East Walnut Street, police said. The resident, Jaime Armando Rojas, estimated the value of his property at $220 and damage at $100.
*Gunshots damaged a sport utility vehicle Thursday night in the 1800 block of East Elm Street, police said. The driver, Terrance Broils of Goldsboro, reported that two vehicles behind him exchanged gunfire and his SUV was struck twice. Damage was estimated at $400.
Teen charged
A 14-year-old boy from Pikeville was arrested Thursday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged in a juvenile petition with three felony offenses -- breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods.
The teen was accused of breaking into a home on Falcon Drive on Aug. 18, Detective Sgt. Carl Lancaster said. A cell phone, video-game equipment and DVD movies, with a combined value of $460, were stolen and recovered.
Correction
A Goldsboro police report that said Crystal Sutton of Jim Grant Road, Snow Hill, was charged with stalking was wrong. Ms. Sutton was the victim of the offense, and another person was charged, according to court records.
