FREMONT -- A 23-year-old man from Wilson was shot and wounded Saturday while sitting in a vehicle, and another man was arrested by Fremont police and charged with the crime.
The victim was identified as Frederick Montrel Williams. He was rushed by ambulance to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was stabilized and then airlifted to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville.
Williams was in intensive care, but his condition was not immediately known.
Williams was shot at about 1 p.m. at West South and Pine streets, Fremont Police Chief Ben Reid said.
Later police arrested Jonathan Anthony Uzzell, 26, of Britlan Drive, Pikeville. He was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and discharge of a weapon into occupied property.
Uzzell was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $30,000 secured bond on the felony charges. His first court appearance to determine his legal representative was scheduled for today.
