Seven charges
A 31-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested before dawn today by Goldsboro police and charged with seven felony offenses in connection with break-ins.
Officer Bobby Smith saw a man at about 3 a.m. in the front yard of a home in the 1600 block of East Mulberry Street. He turned around in an attempt to identify him but lost sight of him. Then Smith saw that the interior light of a pickup truck across the street was on and the door was open.
As other A-shift officers arrived to seal off the area, Smith contacted the truck's owner, Chris Garrison, who said a cell phone had been stolen from the truck. Officers Smith and A. Fowler searched the area and found a man hiding in a row of bushes. He had the cell phone that the owner identified.
Gerald Patrick Lee of South Slocumb Street was charged with three counts each of breaking and entering and larceny and one count of possession of stolen goods. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $25,000 secured bond.
Robberies
A woman swiped $240 from a man, a woman fended off two robbers and another woman was robbed of $16 in separate crimes, according to reports filed with Wayne County authorities.
Amos A. Herring told sheriff's deputies that a woman came to his home on Massey Road at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday and asked for change for a $100 bill. When he pulled out $240, she grabbed it and fled, the report said. As she was leaving, he grabbed a weapon and fired a shot at her car.
The woman was described as white, about 40, 5-feet-4 and 115 pounds with dark, shoulder-length hair.
Mary Kay Collins reported to deputies that she was returning to her home on Renee Drive at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday when two black women stopped and asked for directions. Then the suspects struck and pushed her and tried to enter her car, the report said. When they could not get in, they ran to their car that was driven by a man and fled, the report said.
One suspect was described as being in her 30s and 5-feet-6 with a medium build. She wore brown shorts and a dark green shirt. The other suspect was described as being in her 20s and 5-feet-7 with a dark complexion and a slim build. She wore a wide leather belt with a large oval silver belt buckle.
Mindy L. Sherrod told Goldsboro police that she flagged down a motorist at 8 p.m. Sunday on Corporate Drive and asked for a ride to a store. Instead the driver took her behind the old Wayne Community College building, then threw her to the ground, kicked her four times, removed her shoes and took $16 from her socks. The man fled.
Ms. Sherrod was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokesman said.
The suspect was described as black, about 30, 6-feet and 225 pounds with a bald head and brown eyes.
Two hurt
Two people were injured and damages were estimated at $7,400 in three weekend traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A southbound driver was injured in a two-vehicle collision at 5:55 p.m. Saturday at North James and Holly streets, Goldsboro police said. Travis Montreal Jones, 25, of North George Street was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. The other motorist who was going east, Jason Scott Faulkenbury, 25, of Mobile Circle, Dudley, was charged with a safe-movement violation at a stop sign. Damages were set at $3,500.
*A man fell from a moped at 1 p.m. Saturday at South Audubon and Evergreen avenues and was injured, police said. Robert Alan Garris, 48, of East Walnut Street was released after emergency-room treatment. The moped had about $100 in damages.
*A passenger was injured in a two-vehicle crash at 4 a.m. Saturday on Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway, east of Wayne Memorial Drive, police said. Nicholas Northam, 21, of East New Hope Road was released after emergency-room treatment. His driver, Michael Cerrone Williams, 25, of Maple Street, told police said he had fallen asleep and his car struck a trailer being towed by a wrecker and then overturned. He was charged with reckless driving and an improper lane change. The other driver was identified as Jesse Ronald John, 28, of Megan Lane. Damages were put at $3,800.
Jewelry stolen
About $14,600 worth of jewelry was stolen between May 30 and Friday from a home in the 900 block of N.C. 55 East near Mount Olive, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office reported.
The resident, Iris Best Neal, reported the theft of seven diamond rings, a gold watch, a diamond bracelet, a pearl bracelet and necklace, a pair of diamond earrings, two class rings, silver jewelry, a liberty coin ring and necklace, a herringbone bracelet and chain and other earrings. No sign of forced entry was reported.
Sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*An air conditioner, an electric furnace, a dishwasher and a water bed were stolen between Aug. 1, 2004, and Saturday from a home in the 1800 block of Piney Grove Church Road, deputies said. The thief had damaged a door to get inside. The owner, Stephanie Anable of Virginia Beach, Va., estimated the value of the stolen property at $2,300 and damage at $100.
*A black, four-door 1989 Nissan Sentra was stolen between Friday and Saturday from the 6000 block of Highland Avenue, deputies said. The owner, Adrian Jay Bynum, said he had left the key inside. The car was worth $1,000.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A man's bicycle with clothing stuffed in two bags and other property was stolen Sunday from the Pinewood Square parking lot at 1002 N. Spence Ave., police said. Gary Outlaw of Pikeville reported the theft of 12 pairs of blue jeans, 12 painter pants, 16 pairs of underwear, 25 pairs of socks, 20 shirts, 15 tiedowns and washing powder. The property was valued at $665.
*Hungry thieves broke a window between Saturday and Sunday at a home in the 1500 block of East Mulberry Street and then ate food and drank beer, police said. The resident, Mark David Webb, estimated the value of the food at $26 and damage at $75.
*A drink machine was moved and pried open at a boarding house in the 200 block of East Elm Street and $50 was stolen from it Saturday, police said. Howard Williams, the owner, estimated damage at $600.
*A black, two-door 1993 Jeep Cherokee was stolen Saturday from a parking lot in the 2300 block of North William Street, police said. The owner, Drew McGowan of Goldsboro, said it was worth $2,500.
Drug charges
Two people have been arrested by Goldsboro police and charged with felony drug offenses.
*Candice Charlene Johnson, 24, of Fayetteville was charged Sunday with possession of marijuana in a prison. Her secured bond was set at $3,000.
*Eric Brown, 45, of Waterbury, Conn., was charged Saturday with possession of cocaine, driving while impaired and driving left of center. He registered .12 percent blood-alcohol content, the report said. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $3,5,00 secured bond.
12 charges
A 24-year-old man was arrested Friday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with 12 felony offenses.
Matthew Anthony Bride of Jeffrey Drive, LaGrange, was charged with five counts each of forgery and uttering and one count of breaking and entering and larceny. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $15,000 secured bond
