Jonathan B. Lamoreux has been commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force.
He has been assigned casual duty at Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and will attend flight training in May in Columbus, Miss.
He is the son of Scott and Debbie Lamoreux of Morgantown, V.Va. He is the grandson of Philip and Frances Hood, and the great-grandson of Horace and Edna Hood, all of Grantham.
Sgt. Jason P. Harper has been promoted to his present rank while serving with the United States Army in Kuwait.
He is stationed at Fort Eustis, Va.
A graduate of Southern Wayne High School, he is the son of Edna Wilson Harper of Mount Olive and the late Milton Harper Jr.
Daniel S. Rand has been commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force after completing the Air Force ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) program and graduating with a bachelor's degree from East Carolina University.
He is the son of Gary P. and Jill B. Rand of Powell Road and a 2000 graduate of Southwest High School in Jacksonville.
Montova L. Gaines has joined the U.S. Army under the Delayed Entry Program, which gives young men and women the opportunity to delay entering active duty for up to one year. Enlistees also are eligible to receive as much as $50,000 toward a college education. After completion of basic military training, soldiers receive advanced individual training in their career job specialty prior to being assigned to their first permanent duty station.
Gaines, a 2004 high school graduate of James Sprunt Community College, has reported to Fort Jackson, S.C., for active duty. He is the son of Wanda T. McCoy of Faison and Bobby L. Gaines of Indian Springs Road, Dudley.
Navy Seaman Qudsi J. Gorham, a 2001 graduate of Goldsboro High School, made a port visit to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, during a scheduled deployment, while assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson. During the visit, members of Gorham's unit took time to read, play and assist in teaching children at the Rashid Pediatric Therapy Center in Dubai. The 130 children at the school have a variety of disabilities and range in age from 3 to 15.
The Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group is deployed to the Persian Gulf conducting operations in support of multinational forces in Iraq and maritime security operationsto promote security and stability in the region.
