Quiet weekend
on Wayne roads
The Independence Day Weekend was a safe one on Wayne County roads, said a spokesman for the state Highway Patrol. As July 4 weekends go, Sgt. T.C. McLeod said, this year's was a good one.
"It was good for us. We had about 26 wrecks, but nothing real serious," McLeod said.
Alcohol was a factor in four of the wrecks, McLeod said, and there were 11 DWI charges. "We had a full force out to reduce a lot of them," he said.
McLeod said no one stretch of highway was particularly dangerous, but wrecks were spread throughout the county. He also said no one day was more troublesome than others.
In the city, three people were injured and damages were estimated at $13,500 in two weekend accidents, Goldsboro police reported.
*Three people were injured and damages were estimated at $7,000 in a three-car collision about 10 p.m. Sunday on North Berkeley Boulevard near Langston Drive. One driver, Juana Flores Montes, 40, of Calypso, and a passenger, Juan Andrade Zuniga, 24, of Calypso, and another driver, Sandra Lynn Lopez, 50, of Old Cornwallis Road, Princeton, were taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital for treatment. A third driver, Tammy V. Bryant, 39, of Hilda Place, was charged with a safe-movement violation .
*Damages were estimated at $6,500 in a two-vehicle crash at 3:43 p.m. Saturday at North Berkeley Boulevard and Central Heights Road, police said. Marjorie R. Vinson, 48, of Hood Swamp Road, was charged with a safe-movement violation and an expired registration.
Man assaulted
A 35-year-old man was struck in the foot early Monday by a gunshot at a mobile home on Cabin Creek Drive, according to a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report.
The victim, Jose Rodolfo Avila of Seven Springs, was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital for treatment. Avila told deputies that he did not know exactly where the offense occurred. He said that after an argument between guests, the offender fired a weapon toward the ground and Avila was struck, the report said. Avila did not press charges.
Shed fire
A shed and its contents were destroyed Monday in a fire at 1304 N. Carolina St., the Goldsboro Fire Department reported. The cause of the fire could not be determined, Assistant Fire Chief Jerry Langston said today. The shed was valued at $500, and the contents were worth $200. The shed was owned by Frances Wood.
Assault
A man and his brother-in-law fought Sunday over threats the man had made to his wife, according to a Goldsboro police report.
The husband struck the brother-in-law several times with a metal pipe during the scuffle in the 300 block of Waters Circle, the report said. Moments later, they fell on the ground, and the brother-in-law let the husband get up.
The husband then walked to his car, pulled out a handgun, walked toward the relatives and fired twice, the report said. No one was injured, and the brother-in-law then left.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*A microwave oven and a television were stolen between Sunday and Monday from a rental home in the 1100 block of Faro Road, sheriff's deputies said. The resident, Christopher S. Bogue, put a $200 value on his missing property. He also reported about $150 in damages to two doors and a wall.
*A lawn mower was stolen between June 17 and Saturday after a shed door was damaged in the 500 block of East New Hope Road, Goldsboro police said. The resident, G.D. McKenzie, estimated the mower's value at $150 and damage at $20.
Fugitive caught
A North Carolina woman wanted by Texas authorities since 2001 for a charge of cocaine possession was arrested Sunday by Wayne County sheriff's deputies. Mercedes Sanchez of Nashville was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $50,000 secured bond until she can be extradited to Eagle Pass, Texas.
