Fireworks planned for mall, Pikeville

Fireworks will be the highlight of the Fourth of July in Goldsboro. The glittering fireworks will be at Berkeley Mall in the JCPenney parking lot at 9 p.m.
Fireworks, along with other activities, will also be held in Pikeville. Princeton and Mount Olive also will have activities to celebrate the holiday.
Activities in Pikeville will be Friday, July 1, and Saturday, July 2. On Friday, there will be a 5K run at 6 p.m., followed by a jazz concert at 8 p.m. The concert will include local jazz bands including the Charles B. Aycock Jazz Band.
Saturday will blast off with the dedication of Minnie Dees Park on School Street in Pikeville. The opening ceremony for the park will begin at 10 a.m. The remainder of the morning and afternoon will be filled with activities for various age groups. There will be free games and water slides for children. For adults, there will be the lawn mower/tractor pull, an American Idol-style talent show and gospel and folk music.
Fireworks will begin at 9 p.m. on the ballfield.
The Princeton Area Minister's Association will have a program to honor local heroes, public servants and military veterans on July 4 at 11 a.m. at the town's post office. Special music will be provided during the hour-long program. Refreshments will be available. Participants should bring lawn chairs.
In Mount Olive, festivities will begin July 4 at 4 p.m. at West Brook Park with Celebration in the Park. The old-fashioned celebration will include entertainment, free food and games for children. At 4:30 p.m., there will be a children's decorated bike parade, followed by the singing of the national anthem and a recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance at 5 p.m.
Activities are being sponsored by the Exchange Club.
Closed on the Fourth of July will be public libraries, Wayne Community College and U.S. Post Offices, all of which will resume business on Tuesday, July 5. Trash collection normally scheduled on that Monday will be picked up the following Wednesday, July 6.
