Thieves nabbed
Goldsboro police officers arrested theft suspects and recovered stolen equipment Tuesday. Employees of Napa Auto Parts on Ash Street reported a man left without paying for a remote car starter and Rampage car stereo, valued at $134.98. While the man took the items and left the store, a woman attempted to create a diversion by arguing with an employee. The two were stopped by officers at the intersection of Slocumb and Elm streets. Employees identified the suspects and the items. Al Berrian, 51, and Lavonia Phillips, 26, were taken into custody and charged with misdemeanor larceny.
Accidents
Damages were estimated at $12,000 in two recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, according to reports.
*Charles Alan Lancaster reported a Polaris Sportsman 800 4-by-4, valued at $8,500, stolen from a shed at his mother's home at Nor-Am Road in Pikeville.
*Damages were set at $4,000 in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Beech and Jefferson streets. A 1987 Mazda driven by Lee Russell Sims, 73, of Ironwood Drive, collided with a 1997 Dodge driven by Angela Perkins, 28, of Dove Place. Both drivers told officers they had the right of way.
*Michael H. Rains, 22, of Princeton, was charged with exceeding a safe speed after his 2000 Ford collided with a truck driven by Wilmer Pompey, 56, of Smithfield. A witness told officers Rains lost control of his vehicle while entering Highway 70 at the Spence Avenue on-ramp. In trying to avoid the collision, Pompey's vehicle jack-knifed and collided with Rains' car. Damage was set at $8,000.
Radar detectors
stolen from cars
The Wayne County Sheriff's Office is investigating a pair of vehicle break-ins at Westbrook Avenue. Dannie Dale Littleton reported a radar detector and coins stolen from his 1995 Geo Tracker. The items were valued at $45. Eddie Radford reported a $200 radar detector missing from his 1994 Chevrolet as well. Both incidents occurred between Monday and Tuesday nights.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*Michael Anthony Garner of Maggie Road in Mount Olive reported a break-in of his 1991 Chevrolet. Items missing included a compact disc player, speakers, a camera phone and a tool kit, all valued at $762.
*Myra Lee Faison, also of Maggie Road in Mount Olive, reported a Kenwood compact disc player taken from her 1995 Mitsubishi Mirage.
*Jackson Builders reported an unknown person caused damage estimated at $300 to sheet rock at a construction site on Five Points Road.
*Brandon A. Whitfield, 19, reported that an IBM laptop, valued at $2,000, was stolen from his home on Spence Avenue while he was having a party.
*Carl Brewington, 28, reported an unknown person kicked open the back door of his home at Nelson Drive. Brewington reported two televisions, a PlayStation 2 system and a computer missing. The items were valued at $1,139. Damage to the door was set at $200.
*Melissa Dickens, loss prevention manager at Kmart on Berkeley Boulevard, reported an unknown suspect took one Sony PlayStation Portable and seven Nintendo DS systems stolen between June 18 and 28. The items were valued at more than $1,350.
*Eugene B. Gunter, owner of Sounds on East Ash Street, reported a 9mm pistol valued at $400 was stolen from the office of his business.
*Jerry J. Outlaw of Bryon Place reported hearing gunshots outside his residence just after 2 a.m. Tuesday. Damage to a window, speaker and walls was set at $300.
*Kim Copeland of Leslie Street reported a wicker sofa and chairs were stolen from her front porch. The furniture was valued at $200.
*Brenda Jones, an employee of JCPenney at Berkeley Mall, reported a man stuffed a rack full of shirts into a Belk bag and left the store without paying. He then entered a waiting vehicle, which was described as a burgundy 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer. The suspect was described as black, 45, approximately 6 feet 5 inches tall and weighed 225 pounds.
*Nancy Wolfe of Holly Street reported items missing after an unknown subject pushed an air conditioner unit through the window and entered the home. Items missing were valued at $240 and included a television, DVD player and two quartz watches. Damage to a glass dinette table was set at $100.
