Man is charged
in phone scam
A man who got money from people after posing as a tow truck driver has been arrested by Goldsboro police and charged with four felony counts of obtaining property by false pretense.
Philip Wayne Coley, 33, of Rocky Mount was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $42,500 secured bond.
Police said Coley would call unsuspecting people and tell them that a friend or relative's car had broken down and they needed money for a tow truck. The victims would meet Coley at a predetermined spot and give him the money. After the victims gave him cash, they would call the relative or friend and find out that they did not need a tow truck and did not need any money.
Capt. Al King and Officers Karen Powers and Earl McIntyre investigated the scam Saturday.
After a further police inquiry, Coley was linked to three other scams in March. As a result, he was charged by Investigator Trey Ball with three additional felony counts of obtaining property by false pretense.
23 charges
A 34-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Monday by Goldsboro police and charged with 23 felony offenses.
Jackie Franklin Sutton of North Berkeley Boulevard was charged with 13 counts of forgery and 10 counts of uttering. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $50,000 secured bond.
Sutton was arrested by Investigator G.N. Lynch. The charges stemmed from an investigation by police Investigator Dale Foster in April.
4 people arrested
on drug charges
Four people were arrested Monday by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad at a Goldsboro motel and charged with felony drug violations.
*Terrell Mack Edwards, 25, of Peacock Street, Fremont, was charged with federal armed drug trafficking. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $2 million secured bond.
*Odell Kareem Copeland, 24, of Baker Street, Eureka, was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine. He was jailed in lieu of a $5,000 secured bond.
*Michael Scott Butts, 24, and Treva Gaye Allen Darden, both of Raeann Drive, were charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana. Each was jailed in lieu of a $2,000 secured bond.
The Goldsboro Police Department's Housing Authority and Special Enforcement units assisted in the investigation and arrests.
Robbery
A lone gunman on Monday night robbed the Waffle Place restaurant at 702 Corporate Drive and fled with an unknown amount of money, according to a Goldsboro police report.
The suspect entered the restaurant at about 11:55 p.m., ordered a meal, displayed a handgun and demanded money, the report said. An employee opened the cash drawer, and the suspect grabbed the cash and fled in a small, two-door car, the report said.
The robber was described as black, in his 20s, 6-feet-1 and 150 pounds with a small build, black hair and brown eyes. He wore a blue or black shirt and black jeans.
Jewelry theft
About $7,000 worth of jewelry and $4,080 worth of other property was stolen Monday from a home in the 700 block of Emmaus Church Road, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office reported.
The resident, Timothy Wade Rogers, reported the theft of five rings, three watches and four pairs of earrings. Rogers also said a muzzle-loading rifle, an entertainment unit, a television, a printer, a computer, a radio and video-game equipment also were taken.
The thief did about $300 in damage to a door to get inside.
Deputies also are investigating these reports:
*About $500, a necklace, video-game equipment, a DVD player, a VCR-DVD player, 20 DVDs and 25 towels were stolen between Saturday and Monday from a home in the 100 block of North Hereford Drive, a report said. The resident, M.R. Williams, put a $2,500 value on the property, in addition to the cash. No sign of forced entry was reported.
*A 1989 Ford truck, 10 radios and tools were stolen between Saturday and Monday from The Radford Co. at 1820 N.C. 581 North, deputies said. The property was valued at $4,200.
*A red 1999 Yamaha four-wheeler was stolen between Sunday and Monday from the 600 block of Overman Road, deputies said. The resident and owner, Roger Askiss, said it was worth $3,500.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*Video-game equipment, a gold ring and 10 DVDs were stolen between Monday and dawn today after a window was smashed in a home in the 3900 block of East Ash Street, police said. The resident, Vanessa Crockett, estimated the value of the stolen property at $550 and damage at $50.
*An unknown number of bottled drinks were stolen between June 14 and Monday from a concession stand at Goldsboro High School, police said. The thief cut a padlock to enter the stand.
3 injured in crash
Three people were injured and damages were estimated at $5,500 in a two-car collision at 4:02 p.m. Monday at North Audubon Avenue and Edgerton Street, Goldsboro police reported.
One driver, Elizabeth W. Arrington, 78, of James White Court and a passenger in the other car, Latasha Alston, 22, of Edgerton Street, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. The other driver, T-Lee Rodriguez Williams, 20, of East Mulberry Street, left the hospital against medical advice, the spokeswoman said.
Ms. Arrington, who was going south, was charged with a stop-sign violation. Williams, who was traveling west, was charged with driving while his license was revoked.
