A man on a moped was killed Friday night when his vehicle ran off the road and struck a guide wire, Goldsboro police reported today.
The victim was identified as Johnnie Wayne Exum, 62, of 100 Kornegay Drive, Dudley.
Exum was traveling north on Westbrook Road, between Arrington Bridge Road and South Slocumb Street at about 9:05 p.m., Officer J.V. Rodgers said. The moped ran off the right side near the railroad tracks and struck the wire, sending Exum sprawling from the moped and dislodging his helmet.
The helmet and moped were found away from Exum's body, the report said.
Exum was pronounced dead at the scene.
His death was the second in 2005 in Goldsboro and brought the Wayne County highway death toll to 11 for the year.
