Generosity pays off
Dillon Wooten's generosity paid off again Tuesday night for Wayne Community College.
Wooten, president of Wooten Oil Company, was at the college's annual benefit dinner and auction -- an event that Wooten founded, by the way -- when his ticket was pulled in the 50/50 drawing. The prize -- a cool $3,250.
Wooten didn't hesitate. "Give it all to the college," he called out.
That means the college raked in the whole $6,500 from the drawing. Add in $5,890 from the live and silent auctions, fees from Wednesday's golf tournament, sponsorships, etc., and WCC's Foundation was poised to collect more than $50,000 once the final accounting is done.
Proceeds are used to fund college scholarships. Contact the foundation at 735-5151 for more information.
Downtown Y supported
Officials of the Downtown Goldsboro Development Corporation expressed support Wednesday for a possible Family Y facility on South Center Street.
"That would be a huge benefit to downtown," said DGDC Director Julie Thompson.
Mrs. Thompson said she knows Mount Olive residents who would be more likely to join the Y if it had a location closer to them. That would bring people downtown.
Also, the building would be convenient to city and county employees who may not have time to go out to Corporate Drive, she said.
"I'd be more likely to go if I only had to drive a few blocks," DGDC President Jimmie Edmundson said, before adding sheepishly, "I should say, walk a few blocks."
Family Y officials have had some preliminary discussions with Goldsboro leaders and the trustees of the Wayne County Community Memorial Building about teaming on a new facility. It would include a pool, gym and meeting rooms, all lacking downtown since the Community Building was destroyed by a fire in May 2004.
Bloodmobile
The Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross will hold a blood drive Friday from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base Community Center. Donors will receive a coupon for a free car wash, a Texas Steakhouse coupon and an American Red Cross wristband.
