Father charged
with shooting son
A father who shot and wounded his son after an argument was arrested Sunday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with a felony firearms offense.
Corey Bernard Manuel, 46, of Ruskin Road, Dudley, was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $5,000 secured bond.
Corey Bernard Manuel Jr., 21, of the home, was treated for a leg wound and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, detectives said. He was shot after he had refused to leave the home, the report said.
The shooting case remained under investigation, Detective Sgt. Carl Lancaster said today.
Robbery charges
A 19-year-old man was arrested before dawn today by Goldsboro police and charged with two felony counts of common-law robbery.
Brandon Conrad Billups of Southern Drive, Dudley, also was charged with misdemeanor assault inflicting serious injury and assault. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $10,000 bond.
The report said Billups had asked the three victims at about 11:50 p.m. Sunday in the 900 block of North Spence Avenue if they wanted to buy drugs. When they declined, the report said, Billups asked them for change for $100.
When they refused, the report said, Billups grabbed the wallet with $150 and cell phone from David Hinson of Pikeville and then assaulted him. Hinson's wallet and phone were valued at $265.
Billups then took the cell phone and cigarettes belonging to the second man, Justin Baker of Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, the report said, and assaulted a third man, Robert E. Gay, of Goldsboro. The victims did not need hospital treatment, a spokeswoman said.
Billups was arrested later. But the other suspects fled south on Spence Avenue in a gold car, police said.
Men robbed
Two men were robbed and pistol-whipped before dawn today by two armed men in the victims' home in the 600 block of West Holly Street, according to a Goldsboro police report.
George Fred Lofton told police that he was sitting in his home at about 1 a.m. when the suspects entered through an unlocked door. The suspects displayed a handgun, assaulted Lofton and grabbed his money. Then the suspects went upstairs and took a keyboard belonging to another resident, Danny Ray Lofton, and fled.
A third victim, an unknown white man, fled from the home before police arrived, the report said. The suspects were described only as being black and about 20 years old.
4 injured in 4 wrecks
Four people were injured and damages were estimated at $29,700 in five recent traffic accidents in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A motorcyclist was injured in a collision with a van at 11:30 a.m. Sunday on New Hope Road near Woodbine Avenue, Goldsboro police said. Jay Brantley Capps, 24, of Parkstown Road, LaGrange, was taken to Pitt County Memorial Hospital, where he was listed today in critical condition, a spokeswoman said. Capps was charged with passing in a no-passing zone. The report said the other driver, Jorge Arturo Castro-Rodriguez, 31, of Mitchell Road, Dudley, was slowing to make a left turn when the collision occurred. Damages were set at $3,100.
*A driver was injured and damages were estimated at $5,100 in a one-car wreck at 4:14 p.m. Sunday on U.S. 13 near Saulston Road, the Highway Patrol said. Justin Adam Nabity, 21, of Cashwell Drive was released after emergency-room treatment. He was charged with reckless driving after his car ran off the right side and struck a ditch and a landscape timber.
*A driver was injured in a two-car collision at 5:05 p.m. Saturday on Durham Lake Road near U.S. 13, the Highway Patrol said. Jessica Lynn Pigford, 20, of Durham Lake Road, Dudley, was released after emergency-room treatment. The other driver, Jaziel Tiongson Pejera, 19, of Runnel Place, was charged with a safe-movement violation. The report said Pejera was making a left turn into a convenience store and the car that he was driving collided with Ms. Pigford's southbound auto. Damages were put at $4,000.
*A driver was injured and his car was demolished in a wreck at 8:50 a.m. Friday on Wayne Memorial Drive near Saulston Road, the Highway Patrol said. Corey Maurice Pridgen, 18, of Rachel Drive was released after emergency-room treatment. No charges were filed after the car ran off the right side, came back on the road, then ran off the right side again, struck a ditch and overturned. The car was valued at $10,000.
*Damages were estimated at $7,500 in a two-vehicle crash at 1:55 p.m. Friday on U.S. 117, north of U.S. 13, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Eunice H. Huffman, 79, of Charlie Braswell Road, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. The other motorist was identified as Arthur Talmage Waters Jr., 51, of Green Branch, Mount Olive.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A thief entered the vent fan opening at the A-1 Pawn and Jewelry shop at 1302 N. William St. before dawn today, police said. Then the intruder bent the fan blades and removed a panel to get inside. Nothing was reported stolen. Damages were set at $300.
*A woman was awakened by a noise Saturday night in her apartment in the 1700 block of East Maple Street and discovered an intruder in her home, police said. When the resident said she was calling the police, the man fled. Nothing was stolen, and no damage was reported.
*A racing bicycle, tools, six fishing rods and reels and a stove were stolen between Friday and Saturday after two windows were damaged at a home in the 600 East Beech Street, police said. The resident, Steve Pulliam, estimated the value of the stolen property at $1,275 and damage at $200.
Thefts
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*Four tires, four rims, two door speakers, two seats and a steering wheels were stolen between May 27 and Sunday from a car in the 100 block of Autumn Winds Place, sheriff's deputies said. The owner, Timothy Shaun Daniels of Myrtle Beach, S.C., put a $3,150 value on the property.
*Earrings, a diamond ring, video-game equipment and a purse were stolen between Saturday and Sunday from a home in the 300 block of Haywood Drive, deputies said. The thief had damaged a door to get inside. The stolen property was valued at $1,200. Damage was set at $130 at Korena Mumford's home.
