50th anniversary of Kiwanis
miniature train Saturday
The Kiwanis Club of Goldsboro will mark the 50th anniversary of its miniature train in Herman Park with a celebration beginning at noon on Saturday.
Goldsboro Mayor Al King will officially kick off the afternoon festivities.
1950s-era music will be provided by DJ Luke Vail, and prices will be rolled back to those found in 1955. Train tickets will be 10 cents each, and many items in the Kiwanis concession stand will be sold for 25 cents.
The train and concession stand will close at 5 p.m.
Effort started to name bridge
The Goldsboro City Council has joined Wayne County commissioners in an effort to honor a sheriff's investigator killed in a 2002 traffic accident.
At Monday's meeting, Mayor Al King called for the N.C. Department of Transportation to name the U.S. 117 bridge over U.S. 70 as the Jerry K. Best Memorial Bridge.
Best was described as "a gentle giant, a peacekeeper, a protector and a saver of souls," King said.
Best began working for the sheriff's office in 1977 as a court bailiff and worked his way up to lead investigator. In November 2002, he was assisting a motorist who had hit a deer by removing the animal from the road when he was struck by another vehicle.
More than 1,300 people have signed a petition to name the bridge in Best's honor. It has also been endorsed by the county Planning Board.
