House fire
A home at 409 Creech St. was heavily damaged Tuesday in a fire caused by unattended cooking, a Goldsboro fire official said. No injuries were reported at the Dora Gardner home.
When 12 firefighters arrived minutes after the 9:10 p.m. alarm with three engines, a ladder and a command car, "fire was coming from the back of the house," Fire Lt. John Parks said. They had the fire under control in about 15 minutes, but remained for about another hour to investigate the cause and finish salvage work.
Damage was estimated at $20,000 to the home, owned by Henry Jones of Goldsboro, and $8,000 to the contents. The home was valued at $30,000, and contents were valued at $10,000, Parks said.
Accidents
Ten people were injured and damages were estimated at $35,650 in six recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Three people were injured in a two-vehicle collision at 3:20 p.m. Tuesday on Central Heights Road near Oak Forest Road, Goldsboro police said. One driver, Nicole A. Johnson, 17, of Orbit Road, and two passengers in the other vehicle, Kendia Daniels 18, of Guinevere Lane, LaGrange, and Shomonic Williams, 18, of Ginn Lane, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. The other driver, Tomeka Nevette Speight, 18, of Douglas Street, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. Damages were set at $3,400.
*A driver from Goldsboro was injured in a two-vehicle crash at 12:40 p.m. Tuesday at North George and West Grantham streets, police said. Hubert Atlas Plummer Dunn, 20, of East Pine Street was released after emergency-room treatment. The other motorist, James Green, 70, of North James Street, was charged with a safe-movement violation after the rear-end crash. Damages were put at $3,050.
*Damages were estimated at $8,000 in a two-vehicle wreck at 3:29 p.m. Tuesday at West Ash and North George streets, police said. One driver, Michele Denise Worrell, 18, of Adler Lane was charged with a safe-movement violation. The report said Ms. Worrell had turned left in front of an oncoming, westbound vehicle. The other driver was Virginia S. Griffin, 53, of North Carolina Street.
*Damages were estimated at $5,000 in a three-vehicle collision at 4:21 p.m. Tuesday on Royall Avenue near North Berkeley Boulevard, police said. One driver, Jo Anne Jackson, 41, of North Audubon Avenue, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. The other motorists were Edsel Raynor, 72, of South Randolph Street and Robbie Denver Renfrow, 44, of Reidtown Road, Fremont.
*Five people were injured and damages were estimated at $6,200 in a two-car crash at 9:35 a.m. Monday at U.S. 13 and Saulston Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Peggy G. Norwood, 67, of Wilderness Drive, Pikeville, and the other driver, Jessica Nanette Melton, 20, of Wadesboro, and her passengers, Al Collins, 24, Betty Wall, 46, and Rodney Wall, 36, all of Lilesville, were released after emergency-room treatment. Ms. Norwood was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash.
*A motorist was charged with driving left of center at 4:45 a.m. Monday after the sport utility vehicle that she was driving ran off the left side of Indian Springs Road in a curve near River Road and struck a tree, the Highway Patrol said. Linzy Paige Howell, 20, of Oak Heights Road was not injured. But the SUV sustained about $10,000 in damages.
Break-ins
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*About $2,625 worth of property was stolen between May 18 and Tuesday from a car and a home in the 100 block of Minnie Drive, sheriff's deputies said. The resident, D.B. Stancil, reported the theft of a stereo system, clothing, a compact disc player, dining room set and other property.
*A 52-inch television and computer equipment were stolen between Monday and Tuesday from a home in the 100 block of Lucky Oak Road, deputies said. The resident, Jimmy Lee Davis, put a $4,483 value on the property.
*A washer, a dryer, a dining room set, a microwave oven, rugs, a vacuum, two bar stools and dishware were stolen between May 12 and Tuesday from a rental mobile home in the 100 block of Smith Trailer Park Drive, deputies said. The thief had pried open a door to get inside. The owner, Donald Howard of Mount Olive, estimated the value of the stolen property at $2,590.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*Four dolls, $150, jewelry, a cookie jar and a picture frame were stolen between Saturday and Tuesday and shelves and candles were damaged at the Treasure Hut at 110 N. James St., police said. The stolen property was valued at about $370. Damage was set at $151.
*A door, vinyl siding and sheet rock at a home in the 400 block of North Carolina Street were damaged Tuesday night by gunshots, police said. The resident, G. Nash, estimated damage at $300.
*A black 2005 Big Max scooter was stolen between Friday and Tuesday from Woodard Retirement Village at 1019 Royall Ave., police said. The owner, Michael Burton, said the scooter had been chained and was worth $2,500.
*A total of $90 was stolen between Tuesday and dawn today after a window was damaged at an apartment in the 600 block of Stronach Avenue, police said. The resident, Terry Burns, set damage at $75.
Fraud charge
A 25-year-old woman was arrested Tuesday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with felony embezzlement.
Kimberly Ann Asbill of Farmview was arrested after a business filed a complaint May 13, Detective Lt. Tom Effler said. Her secured bond was set at $1,500.
