Teen arrested
in store holdups
A Goldsboro teenager was arrested Friday by Goldsboro police and charged with armed robbery and second-degree kidnapping.
Shawnquel C. Futrell, 17, of Ball Street was arrested after an investigation into six robbery cases of people or convenience stores since April 17. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $250,000 secured bond.
Police Sgt. David Kelly said Futrell will be charged with more offenses.
Two convenience stores were robbed Wednesday morning, and another store and a pizza delivery man were held up last weekend. The victims described the robbers as being about 16 to 20 years old and about 5-feet-5.
Seniors robbed
A black man barged into the home of an elderly couple on Friday night, assaulted the 87-year-old husband and grabbed about $22, according to a Goldsboro police report. But the thief fled after the 86-year-old wife struck the intruder with a cane and a mop.
The robber was described as being between 30 and 40 years old, 5-feet-9 to 6-feet tall and 150 pounds with a thin build. He wore a black hat, a dark jacket and jeans.
The suspect damaged a door to get inside, then ripped the man's pants and stole a change purse with $2 in coins and a $20 bill, police said. Damage was estimated at $140. Police recovered and stored evidence from home.
More charges
A 36-year-old man was charged Friday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office with the rape of a 19-year-old woman.
Tracey Terell Grady of Stanley Chapel Church Road, Mount Olive, was charged with first-degree forcible rape and first-degree kidnapping. He was charged after he had been arrested by Goldsboro police and charged with five felony sex offenses against another victim. More charges are pending, sheriff's officers said.
Grady's secured bond on the second set of charges was set at $200,000. He already was jailed in lieu of a $500,000 secured bond.
Both assaults occurred on different days near Dobbs County Courthouse Road, Detective Sgt. Rick Farfour said. Lt. Tom Effler and Cpl. Rebecca Sasser assisted in the investigation.
Sex charge
A man wanted on three serious felony charges in connection with an assault on a woman was arrested Friday by Goldsboro police after an anonymous call to Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers.
Rashon Orlando West, 29, of North Center Street was charged with first-degree kidnapping, first-degree rape and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $83,000 secured bond.
West was accused of taking a woman May 15 into a vacant home in the 100 block of North Slocumb Street and assaulting her, Investigator Dale Foster said. Sgt. David Kelly and Investigators Dwayne Dean and Trey Ball assisted in the arrest.
Man wanted
A former Goldsboro resident, whose 2002 murder trial ended in a mistrial, is wanted by federal authorities in Maryland for escaping from custody.
Timothy Smith Jr., who lived on Lime Street, was on federal electronic house arrest in Baltimore. But he cut the electronic monitor from his leg and fled, Goldsboro police said. He may be in Goldsboro.
Anyone with information on Smith's location was asked to call Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers at 735-2255. Callers may remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000.
Smith was charged with the robbery and murder of shopkeeper Yahia Saleh "Ali" Alahwas, 32, on May 10, 2000, for $150 in the AAA Convenient Mart that the victim operated at 1901-B N. William St. Judge Ripley Eagles Rand of Raleigh declared a mistrial because he said the police had not turned over "a significant amount" of evidence to the defense.
Break-in
A cell phone and personal papers were stolen Friday from a home in the 1400 block of O'Berry Road, Wayne County sheriff's deputies reported.
The thief had damaged a door to get inside and may have been surprised when the resident returned home. A necklace also was stolen but was recovered. The resident, Michael James McCumber, put a $124 value on the phone. Damage was set at $150.
Missing
A 15-year-old Goldsboro girl was reported missing Friday to Goldsboro police. Dashae Lamone Smith of 1904 N. William St. was described as black, 5-feet-6 and 150 pounds with sandy brown hair, brown eyes and a light complexion.
When she was seen last at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, she was wearing a black T-shirt, black pants and white shoes. Anyone with information on her location was asked to call police at 705-6572.
