Building fire
PIKEVILLE -- A small storage building at 676 Lancaster Road was destroyed Sunday in a predawn fire, a fire official said Monday.
Patetown Volunteer Fire Chief John Gardner said the cause of the fire was undetermined, but he speculated that it may have been an electrical problem.
"There was nothing funny about it. If he had not woke up, it would have scorched the house," Gardner said of the resident, Grey Peele.
The building was valued at $2,000, and the contents were valued at $500, Gardner said.
Seventeen Patetown firefighters answered the 1:30 a.m. call with four trucks. Pikeville assisted with a similar number. They needed about an hour to put out the fire, investigate the cause and finish salvage work.
Parole considered
A man serving a life sentence for a first-degree murder is being considered for parole. Myron Earl Pridgen was convicted Dec. 20, 1983, in Wayne County Superior Court.
The state Post-Release Supervision and Parole Commission is receiving information to determine if Pridgen qualifies for release under the mutual agreement parole program, or MAPP. The program is a three-way agreement among the commission, the Division of Prisons and the offender.

The state's current sentencing law, structured sentencing, eliminates parole for crimes committed after Oct. 1, 1994. But the commission has the responsibility of considering parole for offenders who were sentenced under previous guidelines.
Truck found in pond
A truck that had been reported stolen was found Monday in a pond in the 200 block of Capps Bridge Road, according to a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report.
The white 1995 Nissan SE was owned by Sudie Ann Parker of Longleaf Road, Princeton, and valued at $7,500. The truck was recovered and stored.
Drug charges
Two men were arrested Monday by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad and charged with three felony drug offenses after an investigation on Hazelwood Drive near Dudley.
Jose Francisco Hernandez, 31, and Jose Narcisco Hernandez Espino, 29, both of Nelson Smith Road, Dudley, were charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, conspiracy to possess marijuana and maintaining a vehicle for the purpose of keeping and selling marijuana. Each man was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $15,000 secured bond.
The Goldsboro Housing Authority police unit and Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers assisted in the investigation.
Rape charge
A 22-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Monday by Goldsboro police and charged with felony statutory rape. Jeremy Allen Bryant of Fairview Circle was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $100,000 secured bond.
11 hurt in wrecks
Eleven people were injured and damages were estimated at $96,900 in 13 recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Two people were injured and their car was demolished in a wreck at 8:04 p.m. Monday on Dr. M.L King Jr. Expressway, the U.S. 70 bypass, at an exit ramp near North Spence Avenue, Goldsboro police said. The driver, Melissa Ann Stansell, 17, of Bridle Path Drive, and her passenger, Laura Whitfield, 17, of Gloucester Road, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. The report said the car had run off the right side and overturned into a bank. Ms. Stansell was charged with reckless driving. The car was valued at $5,000.
*Damages were estimated at $7,000 in a two-vehicle crash at 5:50 p.m. Monday at Salem Church Road and Fedelon Trail, police said. The report said one driver, Ryan Craig Riley, 17, of Dobbs Place, had pulled from a stop sign and the pickup truck that he was driving collided with a northbound van. Riley was charged with a yield violation at a stop sign. The other driver was identified as Tracey E. Ivey, 43, of Adler Lane.
*Both vehicles were demolished in a collision at 7:35 p.m. Sunday at Indian Springs Road and Fields Drive, the Highway Patrol said. A northbound driver, Terry Keener Malpass, 49, of Indian Springs Road, Dudley, was charged with exceeding a safe speed. Malpass lost control of the pickup truck that he was driving, the report said, and it crossed the center line and sideswiped an oncoming southbound van. Neither Malpass, nor the other driver, Bridget Nicole Garner, 21, of Longtree Drive, Mount Olive, was injured. The vehicles were valued at $8,600. Damage to a fence was set at $300.
*A driver from Rose Hill was injured in a one-car wreck at 1:45 p.m. Saturday on Camp Jubilee Road near Allen Smith Road, the Highway Patrol said. Jose Gabriel Gonzales, 21, was listed today in stable condition at Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. He was charged with suspicion of driving while impaired and no operator's license after the car that he was driving ran off the left side in a curve, struck a ditch and overturned. Damage was put at $3,500.
*A driver was injured and the sport utility vehicle that he was driving was destroyed in a wreck at 7:04 p.m. Friday on U.S. 117 near Country Club Road, the Highway Patrol said. Douglas Fabian Barnhill, 26, of Clinton was released after emergency-room treatment. He was charged with reckless driving. He told troopers that he had fallen asleep and the report said the SUV ran off the right side, then crossed the road into the median and overturned. The SUV was valued at $5,000.
*Both drivers were injured in a two-truck crash at 5:05 p.m. Friday on Wayne Memorial Drive near Stoney Creek Church Road, the Highway Patrol said. Douglas Charles Raynor, 40, of South Alabama Avenue and Fred Lee Joyner Jr., 55, of Farmville were released after emergency-room treatment. Joyner, who was going north, was charged with driving left of center. His pickup truck collided with a southbound truck driven by Raynor. Damages were set at $12,800.
*Damages were estimated at $9,000 in a two-vehicle collision at 8 a.m. Friday at U.S. 117 and Country Club Road, the Highway Patrol said. An eastbound motorist, Frances R. Brown, 64, of Salem Church Road, was charged with a yield violation at a stop sign. The report said Ms. Brown's car collided with a northbound sport utility vehicle driven by Vicky Lynn Hill, 39, of North Martin Street, Mount Olive.
*A driver from Fremont was injured and the car that he was driving was demolished in a wreck at 5:57 p.m. Friday on Aycock Church Road near Davis Mill Road, the Highway Patrol said. Jody Ray Walker, 25, of N.C. 222 West left Wayne Memorial Hospital against medical advice, a spokeswoman said. Walker said he swerved to the left to avoid a deer and the car ran off the left side and struck a tree. No charges were filed. The car was valued at $8,000.
*A truck ran off the right side of Pikeville-Princeton Road near Fields Road at 7:20 a.m. Friday and landed in a ditch, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Linda Cheryl Powell, 51, of Bailey, was not charged or injured. Damage was set at $5,000.
*Damage was estimated at $8,500 in a one-car wreck at 8 p.m. Thursday on U.S. 117 near Country Club Road, the Highway Patrol said. The report said the southbound auto ran off the left side into the median and struck the cable guardrail. The driver, Joseph Chad Wiggins, 27, of Crest Drive, Mount Olive, was charged with exceeding a safe speed. He said he was avoiding another vehicle merging into his lane.
*Three people were injured and damages were estimated at $10,700 in a three-car crash at 4:08 p.m. Thursday at Old Grantham and Crestwood Drive, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Caroline Marie Franco, 17, and her passenger, John Stedman, 15, both of Pleasant Pines Drive, and a second driver, Bonnie G. Capps, 54, of Crestwood Drive, were released after emergency-room treatment. Ms. Franco was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. The other driver was identified as Barbara R. McIntyre, 41, of Central Heights Road.
*A passenger was injured and damages were estimated at $16,000 in a two-car collision at 10 p.m. Wednesday at Country Club and Club Knolls roads, the Highway Patrol said. David Boyd, 29, of Kinston, was released after emergency-room treatment. His driver, Derhondra Nechelle Moore, 25, of Jacksonville, who was turning from Club Knolls Road, was charged with a yield violation at a stop sign. The other motorist, David Myzell McCrary, 32, of Greenville, was going east.
*Damages were estimated at $5,500 in a two-vehicle crash at 5 p.m. Wednesday at N.C. 111 and Sandstone Drive, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Kelly Renee Twiggs, 20, of Wood Peck Road, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. The other driver, Felipe E. Gonzales, 17, of Sandstone Drive, was charged with leaving the scene of a collision.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*Six laptop computers were stolen between Sunday and Monday after someone threw a cement block through a door at Eclipse Computers at 112-J S. Berkeley Blvd., Goldsboro police said. The computers were valued at $5,000. Damage was set at $450.
*Tools, with a value of about $345, were stolen between Saturday and Monday from a vacant home in the 1100 block of New Hope Road, sheriff's deputies said. The owner of the tools, Samuel Rabhan of Goldsboro, estimated that the thief had inflicted $100 in damages to a door to get inside.
*Video-game equipment was stolen Monday after a door was damaged at a home in the 100 block of Waynewoods Drive, deputies said. The resident, J.D. Easton, put a $410 value on the stolen property. No damage estimate was reported.
Missing
A teenager has been reported missing to Wayne County authorities. Kevin M. Young, 16, of Raeford, was described as white, 6-feet-1 and 170 pounds, with short light brown hair and blue eyes. He was last seen at 5:30 p.m. Friday and may be staying with relatives in the Wayne County area. Anyone with information on his whereabouts was asked to call the Wayne County Sheriff's Office at 731-1481.
