MOUNT OLIVE -- Residents of Mount Olive who live between South Center and South Church streets can call the police department at 658-5031 and add their names to a list of people forming a community crime watch in the neighborhood.
Mount Olive officials have been trying to organize community crime watches around town since an October shooting. Police Chief Emmett Ballree said smaller crime watch groups can prevent crime by keeping an eye on suspicious activity close to home.
"Smaller areas are better for the neighbors watching out for each other," Ballree said.
Mayor Ruff Huggins said the formation of such small crime-fghting groups is "an ambitious vision, but I think it's possible."
