City workers to have their day

Goldsboro city employees will get the royal treatment Friday. That is, if kings and queens like hot dogs.
The city will hold its fourth annual employee appreciation day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Herman Park Center.
The employees will be able to get massages and health checks, relax to a jazz band, and have their lunches served by Goldsboro City Council members and department heads.
"We want our employees to feel pampered as thanks for the good service they give the public," said Human Resources Director Rick Roberson. "We also want to keep everyone healthy so they can keep doing a good job."
Roberson's department has arranged for more than 70 venders from across the state to take part in the health fair. Services will include screenings for cholesterol, high blood pressure, fitness, vision, hearing, dental, depression and other mental health issues.
Representatives of banks and credit unions will be on hand to advise people about investments and other financial matters.
Students from Johnston Community College's school of massage will help employees work the kinks out.
Also, the event will include an "aqua-massager," which allows people to lie in a tube while high-pressure water jets pound them, kind of like a car wash, Roberson said. "That will be a real highlight of the day."
Management will be serving picnic-type foods, like hot dogs, chips and cake, Roberson said, adding there will be an emphasis on low-fat and healthy foods.
Also during the event, the city will be recognizing its employees who have assisted in the Reading for Success program at Dillard Middle School.
WGBR personality Wayne Alley will emcee the program. Several sponsors have provided the city with door prizes to give out. The jazz band from Southern Wayne High School is scheduled to perform.
Goldsboro has 478 full-time employees and around 40 part-time or seasonal workers, all of whom are eligible to attend the event. City departments will send workers in shifts to avoid having to close.
